hofstra university

does anyone know a lot on hofstra in new york? my dad went there and i have good grades, and my older sister received a lot of scholarship money for legacy, so can anyone tell me anything about the school and the college town?

I was accepted to Hofstra two years ago, but chose to attend elsewhere. It’s an okay school academically, really. Quite average, run-of-the-mill, middle-of-the-pack. Very, very overpriced (they don’t meet need). The campus looked pretty, but the surrounding area is an absolute nightmare in terms of safety and aesthetics.

Has a good reputation locally and active campus life. I think it is worth checking out

I live in commuting distance. The school is okay. It used to be known as the school where rich local parents sent those kids they were afraid to send further away from home but it has really tried to attract a more wide ranging population. The law school is highly rated and its grads get work though not necessarily at white shoe firms. Its medical school is just getting off the ground but the students I know who are going there are bright enough to have had other choices.

My sons have a couple of friends there. All of them live at home and drive to school because their families can’t afford the tuition plus the room and board. My friend’s daughter recently graduated. She had been away at school but came home because she missed home too much. She commuted to Hofstra and did very well and enjoyed the school. I will say that the commuter kids I know who go there don’t generally participate in the on campus activities. My son’s friend works and hangs out with his friends from childhood, like my son, who attends a local community college because he didn’t want to go away and I can’t afford Hofstra tuition.

It does offer money.

@LBad96 @techmom99 last year my sister had a 3.6 GPA i think and she was accepted to hofstra with $20k/year in scholarships, i don’t know why she didn’t go. i am just afraid that it is too much of a local school, and i live in colorado. i feel like the population is going to be all garden city/long island kids

It’s good academically & overall, but it’s a bit pricey.

When I visited the campus(the side closest to Uniondale,NY) it was fine, however I hear mixed things about Hempstead & most students go around the Garden City area for off campus. I think it’s one of those schools where on side is a good area & the other side is sketchy.

For me it was $35K/yr whereas my current school(Rutgers University-Newark) is about $17K/yr, so Hofstra was too expensive for me.

I was accepted with $12.5k/year in scholarships, but they gave me no other aid besides that. My family was gapped about $44k. Not at all worth it for a safety/low match.

The school itself isn’t what I’d call good, though it’s not bad either. It’s very average. It’s respectable on the academic side of things. Doesn’t really attract a lot of world-class young talent, just okay-ish average students who come from rich families who can afford to send them anywhere they like, but couldn’t get into any higher-ranked privates or more affordable, respected publics; a “this will do” school, if you will. It has a decent reputation within LI/NYC, but it’s not very well-known outside of the Tri-state area. But of course, there are great students who work hard there, just as in any other school. Off campus areas are definitely very sketchy and it was a massive turnoff in addition to the fact that most students are from the Tri-state and commute to campus. It just didn’t seem vibrant from my perspective.

I believe that there is a shuttle to the LIRR station but I don’t know how often it runs or if there is a bus to the local mall, etc. I think that residential students are allowed to have cars.

We looked at Hofstra for my middle son, who had the stats to get a full ride there but he opted for a SUNY upstate because he wanted to be away from the Island. I don’t blame him.

Hofstra’s best feature is its proximity to Manhattan (about a 40 minute rush hour commuter rail ride) In my experience, internships are abundant for Hofstra students and they lead to jobs for graduates – and you would be surprised how many kids come from outside the tri-state area, lured no doubt, by location and discounted tuition. Hofstra will host the first 2016 presidential debate – as it did in 2012 and 2008 – and that has raised the profile of the school as it aspires to national rather than regional recognition. The immediate area is very challenged economically and there have been well-publicized criminal incidents – but a scant 3 miles away is one of the most upscale suburbs in the tri-state region which is not uncommon on Long Island. Hofstra used to be known as a commuter school, but that really is not the case anymore.

@highredmom ya!! my dad went to school there, and he has friends who grew up in/ live in garden city! I’ve heard its really nice, and the distance to manhattan is also definitely intriguing me! thank you !!
