Does anyone know anything about Hofstra University? Is the surrounding area nice? Is it very difficult to get into? Are the people there generally friendly? Any comments would be greatly appericiated... thanks a bunch!

I am from LI. Hofstra for many years has been known as a commuting school-although that has been changing. It is fairly easy to gain admittance. My son did not consider it because he wanted to go away to school. I have heard they give excellent merit aid for above average students. It is relatively close to NY and you would have a wealth of internships there if you wanted that. I know C students who have attended--and A students who went because of scholarships. They are trying to attract out of staters and gain a more national reputation. I can't comment on friendliness, but the surrounding area is fine. They are a big lacrosse school.

I got accepted at Hofstra. Do I have to apply for a merit based scholarship (I am not applying for financial aid)? I'm fourth in my class with A LOT of EC's and leadership positions. I was hoping to get some merit scholarships along with my admittance, but I haven't gotten anything. Any ideas?

Don't be shy Camus. Email or call both the admissions and the financial aid offices at Hofstra and ask them about how to apply for any potential merit scholarships. Let them know you are very interested in attending but want to learn more about merit awards before making your final decision. This is really something you need to take control of. Good luck!

Hi,

Well im very interested in getting admitted into Hofstra as a transfer. I currently have 41 credits in a 4 year University .

My main quesiton , what is the easiest school I should apply in order for me to get accpeted there ? My major is Business Management , also would they be able to give me financial aid with that Gpa , eve n though I dont qualify for FAFSA :(

Does anybody know anything about their honors college and honors housing. I found the book list and small description on their website. We would like some more information. Is honors housing worthwhile, or is regular housing better? Is this program worth it for a business major? The first year focus is on humanities. How tough is it to keep your gpa up, and keep a merit scholarship while in honors? How many applicants are invited into the program, and how many of those who attend Hofstra decide to attend the honors college? What are the average stats of a honors college student?

I am sure someone here knows something about Hofstra's honors college and housing.

you should go not only is it an all around good college, and that one lady from g-unit goes there.

From what i understand, Hofstra housing are concrete towers. and they dont look comfortable

Jaxsurf, I don't know what g-unit is.

Red06, I forgot what the outside of the dorms look like. We saw the freshman regular dorms. They look like very average freshman dorms. They aren't bad, but not beautiful. The grounds at Hofstra, however, are beautiful. They have well manicured gardens, and artwork throughout the gardens.

I wanted to find out what the honors college housing is like, and if it is worthwhile living there rather than in the regular freshman housing.

I can provide some basic information in response to the questions by the OP. Hofstra has a fairly decent local reputation. Costs for a private university are reasonable with tuition of about $20k. Hofstra does play the discounting game with FA. Admission is fairly easy with about 70% admit rate and the bottom SAT quartile is about 1100 or so. 6-yr graduation rate is about 50% and business is the most popular major. As mentioned above, the campus is fairly attractive and well maintained, but a long way from what I would call beautiful. The dorm towers are closer to ugly with rooms which are about standard. The surrounding area is the biggest negative. Hofstra is just south of an industrial park with large office and warehouse buildings. There are no restaurants or attractions in the industrial park. The campus straddles a busy street and the halves are connected by an elevated walkway. There are some restaurants and stores on the street, but it is an unattractive area. Just south of campus the area is low income and rough. There is not much reason to leave the campus on foot.

You need to spend some time in the area to find out what the students are like. There are some unique attributes and by national standards they would rank less than average for friendliness.

it's like a lot of areas on long island - transitions from one type of neighborhood to another can be very sudden.
immediately around the college is not great, as was noted above. but its not far from garden city which is a very upscale area (not that a student would have any dealings there). and not far from roosevelt fields a major shopping mall.
hofstra is very close to the nassau coliseum if being near professional sports is of any importance.
i would strongly urge anyone considering hofstra to visit, and to really include a good look at the surrounding areas in such a visit.

edad, I agree with your comments about the surrounding area. The campus gardens are beautiful. I do agree that the buildings are fair, and I have seen nicer and many that look quite similar to Hofstra's.

Could you explain what you mean about the financial aid discounting game? I agree that the sticker price is reasonable for a private school, and the six year graduation rate is low (about the same as for your average state school, I guess).

I agree with you about LI friendliness. I also did note a fair # of students there from New England.

unbelievablem, I agree that a ride around the area and a visit is important.

Does anyone know anything about the honor's college?

IM A long Islander I grew up 2 towns over from Hofstra and went to there day camps as a youngster...I just moved to a place about a half an hour away from my old town(im 16) hofstra is a great school but its not the safest of areas and to get from one half of campus to the other u have to cross a busy road(Hempstead turnpike is crazy) and eventho theres bridges sometimes u still have to cross instead of going through the covered bridges so iff u go be careful!
