Out of the blue, my National Merit Finalist son wants to know about scholarships at Hofstra! Frankly, I don't even know where it is, or anything about the school. He's in the running for Harvard, Princeton,Georgetown, Washington and Lee, and Vanderbilt (depending upon scholarship $$$), and Auburn University for full ride scholarship. However, Hofstra popped up, so I thought I'd check it out. I seem to recall in the 60's Bill Cosby had a comedy routine about--don't know anything else about HU. Help?

It’s on Long Island. Doesn’t have the “prestige” of the other schools on your son’s list, but since he’s over qualified, he maybe be eligible for more $$$. My daughter has been receiving recent emails from them as well.

I went to Hofstra! It’s what you make of it. I have some very successful friends from college, many got their jobs through the university placement service interviews during senior year … but I won’t say when Personally, I can’t measure my own success based on career because I gave it up to stay at home ten years ago; but I never regretted my time at Hofstra. I have happy memories.

There are some majors where Hofstra excels and the school seems to be growing at a healthy pace. One of the college books I bought said, “this is not your parents’ Hofstra”, which made me laugh. In my opinion, it is a school which markets itself very well.

Recently interesting was their decision to cut their football team; shook up a lot of people but they backed it up with a lot of financial analysis. They balanced this action by opening their medical school this year.

Beautiful facilities for some of the sports, but sadly, no team for my daughter, so her invitation to apply online went into the ‘not interested’ pile. However, she’s interested in speech therapy, so if she were not looking to do her sport in college, I’d definitely take her out to have a look. Even if they didn’t have a good team, but she won’t go to a school with no team at all She’d be a fish out of water.

And as minofrau says, they might give him some good $$$. However, it is no ivy school - that’s for sure. Good luck to your son!

Great, thanks Wilberry. Honestly, the only thing I knew/know about Hofstra was from a comedy routine decades ago by Bill Cosby… I didn’t even know where it is, etc…

My son has a list of 12 schools–yes, 12–to which he has applied. He assures me they are all good schools with scholarship possibilities for him. He has the sure-thing admittance to Auburn with a full scholarship; in fact, he’s there right now visiting his older brother and fortunate enough to take in the LSU-Auburn football game. I think he’d be very happy there, but he wants to fish in a bigger ocean!

Again, thank you and best wishes to your daughter.

Thanks Rick,

I actually stumbled on your post when I was looking for something else, after I replied I see I don’t belong here! My daughter’s SAT scores were at the right level, but I guess she didn’t have all the knowledge yet when she took the PSATs! ;-)

My daughter is hoping to be a student athlete in college … and as her coach says, “cast a wide net.” I’m sure the same applies with the National Merit Scholarships … although I know little about them, since alas, they won’t be factoring into our formula …

I’ll try to remember to check back and see what he has decided!
