hey i got deferred at CALS in the Biology and Society major and i was wondering if this is a good list of stuff to send to add to my file.

SAT II scores: i didnt take them and they said something in my letter about it so im registered for Math IC, Writing, and Biology (studying hard)

Another essay about photography, which is one of my original EC's. i also put in a few of my best prints and a newspaper article with my photography in it.

A new statement: you know, about why i still want to go there other from what i've already mentioned, talked about first trimester and senior project, and how im taking SAT IIs and im okay with the deferral

3 new recs from my ap calc teacher, art history teacher, and volleyball coach (something i hope to do)

updated resume

3 portfolio pieces: ap calc test with an A, final from science last year that i received the highest grade in the class, and a certficate from hilary clinton for my Gold award

alot i know, but i heard you are supposed to really bug them and show alot of perserverence(sp?) so do you think there is anything else i can do that would really help?

my original stats were:
740M 590V
no GPA or rank
good essays and recs
excellent ec's and community service

Ok...definitely send the SAT II scores if they're good.

I guess you can send the photography essay (but it has to be attention-grabbing, don't just send for the sake of generating volume)

Send them the new statement about why you still want to go (this is standard for deferral).

You want to send 3 new recs? How many did you have before? It seems like you're overdoing it here.

Updated resume...ehh ok send that.

Now your portfolio pieces...you want to send a calc test and a science test? You're kidding me...You're transcript shows your grades. You're two A's are not special. You can send the hillary award tho.

my college counselor recommended the tests because i got recs from both teachers

Hey Caitlin!
Good luck with your upcoming SATs and Cornell RD.

About your portfolio pieces -- Math and science are pretty straightforward; either you get it right, or you don't. So if you have a Ross D (that's an A for all you kids in the real world) AND recs from the teachers, they'll automatically assume that you got D's (A's) on all of your tests. Instead of taking up valuble space with multiple choice tests, you should probably send them mostly writing samples. I sent Yale a lab from Flagg's class that was pretty much all SAs, a creative writing assignment, and an AH paper. I think adcoms would rather see that you can write well and know what you're talking about, rather than the fact that you can circle an answer out of 4 or 5 different choices.

If you need to send something from science, how about the respiration and photosynthesis papers that we wrote last year? or the Big Bang Theory paper from this year? Think about it a little. You don't have to send any portfolio items at all; I think you have enough to send Cornell as it is anyway. Just remember not to overdo it. Like someone said on the Yale board, "A thick folder is a thin candidate." ;)

-xo Dani

thanks dani!

ah im just so frazzled i dont know whether to just go to UVM. purrone was mad that i didnt want to send portfolio pieces during ED. but yeah you're right about the whole multiple choice thing but i honestly hate my school writing and i wish i did good on those labs (i got Us haha).

<3 caitlin

bummmmer. what about the papers that we had to write this year? any of them D's?
