Holiday Essay Procrastination!

Now that winter break is here, I was wondering how many people still have essays to do. Any super procrastinators? People who've been done for months? I'll admit, I've still got 2 essays to do before the dreaded 1/1/11. To any others who've still got essays to do, do you have any tips for me on avoiding my terrible procrastinatory habits?

You should get started writing!

I was in the exact same boat when applying to colleges.

You need to figure out topics and have drafts ready soon. In the ideal world, you will be able to wait a few days before writing and submitting your essays so that you can get some perspective on them. If this becomes unreasonable, you should get another person to read you the essay aloud, as this often lets you catch flaws you would otherwise never see.

If you start freaking out, and decide that you need professional help, you can find such people on services like [url=■■■■■■■■■■]■■■■■■■■■■/url

I didn’t like the commonapp essay that I submitted to my ED school, so I decided to change the topic. I only started writing maybe two days ago, and I didn’t spend too much time on it. I think I spent close to 2 hours total writing it, and then another 2 editing. The point is that it takes more time to come up with the topic than it does to write the essay.

My advice is to think of a few topics today and write two essays, disregarding grammar or length. This is just to get you warmed up. Then over the next two days think of the topic you want to do. If its the one you already wrote about, then you’re in luck. If not, spend two days writing it. Then spend another day editing, and then send it to CC users to edit. Voila, you’ll be done in 6 days max.

Only two? I have friends finishing nine, and I had eight to do by now before getting my ED acceptance.

two essays left? that doesn’t even qualify as procrastination. I have still have yet to write a single essay.

Dude I have 9 essays to write before 1/1, and 1 essay before 12/31
■■■ =D

Common App essay and 5 supplements, all due in January 1-3… I haven’t started yet.

Why can’t I bring myself to write? I should really be working hard on these essays; they could impact my life significantly. This is the most stressful thing, ever.

Yea. I have 4 essays. I have started most of them but have yet to finish them.
Start off with an outline. This will make your time much easier. trust me.
As for procrastination I’m can’t help because I have this problem too.

I have to perfect my Common App essay and do 1 supplement (that I have yet to start) by January 2nd, then do 2 more supplements by January 10th, and 2 more by January 15th. I agree completely with recurse: “Why can’t I bring myself to write? I should really be working hard on these essays; they could impact my life significantly.” I don’t know why I can’t bring myself to care, these could decide my future.

I didn’t get into my ED college and I hadn’t started on my other apps, so I had to write all supplements for my nine privates last week. I basically just locked the door and typed. I’m about to submit my Common App, but I still have to proofread all of my supplements. It’s not as bad as I thought it would be. I just hate proofreading.

Good luck!

I have to do my…
CommonApp essay, Cornell supplement, Penn supplement, Northwestern supplement, and I have to find someone to write a peer evaluation for me for Dartmouth.

Not that bad, problem is I have a lot of schoolwork to do.

All i have left are the two short essays for the Hopkins supplement. I was going to rewrite the essay i used for EA, but i got too anxious and submitted my Apps :). Coke, how many schools are you applying to? I applied to 5 and thought it was expensive, i can’t imagine paying for 9. If only we could go back to the good old days of the Soviet Union, haha, my parent’s didn’t have to pay a cent.

Good Luck guys.

Haha i have around ten to write before 1/1 or 1/3
I am the master procrastinator of all mankind!
To make you feel better i started my essay brainstorming on 25 dec. beat that haha

You guys are weak. 21 essays/questions! Beat that amberisdead

10 “Why this University/Interest” type questions,
6 on an intellectual experience
7 kinda long questions about different things

^that’s ridiculous

Thankfully, a bunch of them overlap (the 6 on the experience will be the same with some editing for each prompt, the same goes for the 7 long questions.)

ok sami296 you win LOL but why would you wanna win haha
i’m glad i lost to you

I really just have no idea what to write about. Aggggghhhhh. This is driving me insane!

Whoa Sami! I too am glad I didn’t beat you. This thread actually makes me feel much better. I have to finish one supplement and write another 500 word supplement by January first. That wouldn’t really be a problem if I didn’t have this 7-10 page paper for my AP government class due the day I get back from break (January 3rd). Ahhh!

1 app due on 28th, 1 on 31st, 6 on 1st, 2 on 2nd, 2 on 3rd, 1 on 15th… And I haven’t even finished my Common Application!!! sigh
