I have heard that schools such as Berkeley and UCLA really only care about GPA. Is this true? Does this also apply to
UCSD
UCSB
UCD
USC

GPA is a huge factor in admission for most of the UCs, but it is holistic review. They look at everything.

No. My sister had a UC GPA of 3.65 with 1640 SAT score and just got in, along with UCLA and UCSD. But she had awesome EC’s. So she’s proof that GPA isn’t the only thing they care about.

Nope, but it plays a pretty big role. You could have other factors that overpower GPA, like being a high level athlete, other really great achievements, special circumstances, etc…

Well I have a 3.9 UW GPA & a 1670 SAT Score (my other info is on the official Class of 2016 thread) and was accepted to Berkeley and waitlisted from UCLA. So different colleges look at different things. It seems like Berkeley favors GPA & EC.

I should be proof that they DO review applications holistically. I got into UCB and a few other UC’s I applied to as well. While they ARE GPA focused, they do look closely at other aspects of your application as well. I talked to an ex-admissions officer at UC Berkeley and UCLA and they both said, after GPA, the Personal Statement is the most important part of your application.

GPA: 3.46 (I had one C in my junior year too! So no upward trend)
UC weighted: 3.78
Weighted fully: 4.04
SAT: 2170
ACT: 33

I did NOT receive a supplement, so I wasn’t a borderline applicant to them. The reason why I believe I got in was because I opened myself up in my personal statements and wrote about who I was and what I enjoy doing. I also wrote about my fears and my aspirations in life, making myself literally vulnerable to the admissions.

These people want to know the face behind the numbers, the person who they’re supposed to try figure out through these couple pieces of paper in front of them. If you’re applying to those schools next year or have to write an essay to appeal or waitlist, try doing just that - SHOW them who you are.

Ok thanks. Can any1 tell me about The other UC’s besides Berkeley. It seems like they do have some kind of holistic approach. Cause my GPA isnt good but my EC’s are fantastic along with my SAT

You should do some research on each of them. It’s hard to explain all of the unique qualities of each campus in one post.

I don’t know how they review things but I was rejected
I have a GPA of 4.07/4.12 and am ranked 2nd out of 189 students. I’m an international student with an SAT score of 2190. I think I have pretty good EC’s (compared to the other kids who got in as well) as I’m president of a couple of clubs and have been committed to two community service organizations since middle school.

I really dunno what happened there D:
