Hey all :)
I just had a quick question....does holy cross screen kids before they are admitted into the premed program? I know the college has some of the highest med-school acceptance rates in the country.

I don’t know if they screen who can be pre-med.

I think (not positive) that they “screen” by not writing Committee Letters for students who they don’t think will get accepted.

Once a person doesn’t get that committee letter, they wouldn’t apply to med schools because they would realize that their chances have been severely limited…

Hopefully, someone who knows for sure whether HC limits its committee letters will weigh in

Yes, they absolutely do screen who is eligible for a Committee Letter, which is in essence, their premed “program”. They make it quite clear on their website. As part of the Frosh admitting process, they even tell you if your are in or not. If not, earn great grades in the Frosh classes and you can apply as a Soph.

Yes, they absolutely do screen who is eligible for a Committee Letter

Well, there you go. By controlling who going to get a Committee Letter for their med school apps, the school is assuring that they will have a high admittance rate to med schools. They determine who has the academic strengths to go forward.

Captain…

What are your stats?

What do you mean by screening?

What Blue means is that the school looks over a students stats/strengths and determines which students are strong enough to be med students. Those who they think are strong enough will get the CLs. That is the screening process.

have a 3.66 gpa (estimation). I took the math level one and 2 subject tests and got 800’s on both and on a practice act i got a 33 composite. Senior year I plan on taking all AP’s and being a peer leader.

When are you going to take the SAT and ACT?

I noticed that you want to do HC ED. Are your parents willing to pay whatever HC requires? If so, good.

Edit: Awkward post, nevermind lol.

^^^

Yes…for a second.

Anyway…are you pre-med at HC?

BTW…what is HC’s admit rate for MD Med schools in the US? 85%?? more? less?

^ If you’re asking me, yes, I got admitted into the pre-med program when I applied

[Frequently Asked Questions](http://academics.holycross.edu/healthprofessions/questions#question)
“From 2004-2009, 82% of Holy Cross applicants were accepted on average each year into at least one medical school. (Keep in mind applicants first gained a recommendation from the program committee.)”

That’s dating back from 2004-2009, so it could be bumped up a little by now possibly.

If you’re asking me, yes, I got admitted into the pre-med program when I applied

lol…

Yes, I was asking you.

What was the formal “admittance” into the HC pre-med program as an incoming frosh?

They sent everyone in the mail some kind of green survey/form that asked basic questions like ‘how’d you hear about Holy Cross?’ and others. They also only asked whether the applicant was interested in doing biology and/or pre-med since they were the two most competitive major and program they offered. There wasn’t really any certain criteria needed to be admitted into it that I knew of. Nothing extra had to be done outside of the application and other credentials needed for basic admittance into the school. I’m not too sure what they were specifically looking for in their incoming frosh for pre med :|?

Can you clarify…

What does it mean to be “accepted” as pre-med at HC?

At other schools you can be anything (you don’t even have to declare that you are pre-med) and just take Bio, chem, ochem, calc, etc. How does HC prevent others from following the same program?

I can understand that when it’s time to apply to med schools you won’t get a Committee Letter if your stats arent’ good…but what does it mean as an incoming frosh?

They look at your stats like your GPA, test scores, rigor of courses in HS, etc. I’m trying to look on the website for more information on how they decide, but I’m having no such luck :

They’re not really preventing others from following the program. I mean, you can always apply your sophomore year and see if you can make it. The College has a Health Professions Advisor to assist all students planning careers in the health sciences, whether or not they are in the Health Professions Advisory Program AKA pre med.

If you’re in pre med, I think you’re basically guided by an advisor who will suggest what you should take, help you really prepare for medical school, and be guaranteed admission for the basic courses required for medica/dental/vet school.

I don’t really know specifics. I didn’t even start college yet! Haha. I will be in the fall this year sooooo we’ll see how this pre med program works exactly.

Here’s what they say on the Holy Cross website:

When in doubt, try google, as in ‘holy cross premed’.

[Health Professions](http://academics.holycross.edu/healthprofessions/)

http://academics.holycross.edu/files/healthprofessions/healthprofessionsprimer.pdf

Yes, Google’s an awesome tool! However, I did look at those exact websites before when I was trying to answer her question, but they didn’t state exactly how one is selected for the slot into the program as a freshman.

HC has a very long record of pre-med greatness and strong medical school placement.

Sure, if you screen out all but the best kids that want to apply to med school, the ones that make it thru the HC screening do very well.

Actually quite common practice. BC does the same thing with their premed program: [BC Committee Evaluation Process - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/premed/applying/committee.html)

Does Fordham University screen their pre-med applicants as well?
