I know this is just my decision, but I am wondering what others would think. I have narrowed my list down to College of the Holy Cross and Fordham, planning to major in History and do Pre-Law. Already admitted to both, and should be around the same price. The social scene at both schools seem very similar, so I was wondering what other people would choose and why? Thanks.
I would choose Fordham because of its location, but that is just me. Some people hate the bustle of NYC, and find if very tiring, which will, of course, take away from your studies. Worcester is small, but it has enough going on to provide opportunities for internships, etc. Housing in the later years is more difficult/expensive at Fordham.
Hard to beat the Jesuit approach to education, so you will be served well at either place. Holy Cross has a slightly more progressive history. Fordham has great speakers on religion and theology almost weekly, if that is an interest.
Very similar undergraduate student body and admission qualifications so it is no surprise to be admitted at both. History (and pre-law) have good reputations at both schools. Both are known for that excellent (and Jesuit) undergraduate liberal arts focus. Suspect the work load and professors are similar.
Holy Cross might be a bit more of a social justice/progressive school (if that is particularly appealing) while Fordham has a marginally stronger academic reputation nowadays (outside of Massachusetts, perhaps). NYC culture and other opportunities have an appeal to many that Worcester cannot match for those looking to venture beyond the respective campus gates - but that is more of a personal preference issue.
Holy Cross would give you smaller classes and more access/closer relationships with professors, if that is important to you. Two good choices. Good luck!
Holy Cross has a better academic reputation than Fordham and as a LAC it is solely focused on undergrad education. Holy Cross has a higher 4 year graduation rate and a higher 1st year retention rate which speaks to the satisfaction of students. HC has a very good law school admit rate. If being near NYC is important, then Fordham is fine. Boston is 45 min away from HC by car and kids go in on weekends although there’s lots going on in campus and Worcester that most find things to do locally. Academics are tough and students take pride in that fact! Great school and great people. Go Crusaders!
