For a FL house, especially if you are going for a beach-y vibe, I would go with white (or lighter wood tones).
I’ve seen driftwoody shades of gray that look very Florida… with pale sandy tones in the color of backsplash, Pale blue ceiling??
Did OP say light gray with white countertops or a different color combo? I like that look (SIL has it) and think it won’t age too much with trends going in and out. I have white counters, some white cabinets, some very dark wood cabinets, and the white makes me happier when the kitchen is clean and tidy. A light enough gray will probably have the same effect for OP. Just my thoughts.
We have light green and white in our kitchen. I’m not a fan of light green but we have all tolerated it for over 30 years so I guess it’s neutral enough that ur doesn’t bother any of us enough to change it.
Yes, I’m thinking light gray with a light/white quartz countertop and light but not too light honey-toned wood floors. Something like the pic. I have dark countertops now and definitely don’t want that again. Hadn’t thought about using color on the ceilings but I like the idea - have to look at the lines to see if I can put that off without it being too much.
The gray in the pic has a nice warm undertone - I think it’s a nice compromise between you and your husband’s preferences. I myself also like the cool undertone grays when they are that light - you can’t lose!
My comment would be gray can be nice - depending on your style what can really set it off would be the handle/pull hardware you choose.
My other comment is gray on cabinets, fine as long as you love it! I like it with the flooring you show above - which is not gray. I think the recent “make all the floors gray” is awful and won’t be here for long. But of course I agree that it’s your home - if you’re building the plan must be to stay there awhile - so get what makes you smile when you walk in the room!
This is more like geige or whatever it is called. I would make it a shade or two lighter. If you keep it light enough, it will pass as an off-white. Just make sure the paint is cabinetry quality paint.
Definitely liking the floor color! I have never been a fan of the fake weathered wood floors.
Yes, I do think it’s got a warm undertone. The color is called “Stone Gray.” We don’t have the option of selecting different tones. There’s a light gray, dark gray, a few wood finishes, white and navy. We do have the option of selecting different cabinets for the outers and the island.
I too am not a fan of the grey floors, especially with gray cabinets.
I think this combo of gray cabinets, white based quartz and warm wood floors is a neutral but interesting palette. I go to the design meeting next week and when I’m faced with lots of decisions I may just lose it and walk out having selected something totally different LOL.
I like white cabinets with a dark wood island. Black or brass lighting fixtures. I love white cabinets with a navy island also. Light countertops. Wood floors, medium. Wood floors are easier to keep clean than tile.
I would not do anything dark in Florida.
A friend of my mom’s built a new house in the south. Everything was beautiful. White cabinets, dark wood island but she put beautiful gray tile floors in the living areas. Looked great but she is finding that they are very difficult to clean and keep clean.
My sil wanted a very trendy black hardwood floor. Impossible to get right, impossible to keep clean.
We painted our solid oak brown cabinets with a very pale Benjyamin Moore grey. Incredible paint job looks like factory quality.
New hardware, porcelain floor, SS appliances and we’re very happy with the mini makeover of our retirement home kitchen.
I really liked white and gray but I think these colors had a good run and tide is turning now. Which colors and finishes do you wish to make a come back?
Light grey is a good choice, in my opinion. Neutral colors are always a go-to option.
The nice thing about Neutral is that you can change it up. I completely gutted my white kitchen and put in…a white kitchen. Went for a gray floor and a countertop with gray veins to soften it. I can paint walls if I want a little color (which I did once then went back to white.) I have several covers for a ruggable runner and tea towels that are in the palette of each, so I can switch up the color in about 5 minutes depending on mood, season, etc.
It is your kitchen so get what you like! I would be mindful of care with rentals - nothing that stains easily or will break your heart if damaged. With that said, my husband is probably a bigger challenge to my kitchen than any renter will be to yours!
This is not our place, but a different condo in our building. Just sharing as an example of showing a wood stained (rather than painted) cabinet with gray and white.
I personally like this look as I think it keeps the space a bit, “warmer.”
Edit: the lighting in this photo is not great. The back splash appears more cool gray whereas the floors and counters appear more warm gray. In real life the colors in the back splash work well with the floors and counters even though they look a bit, “off” in this photo.
It looks like the kitchen is part of an open floor plan. I’d go with all white cabinets and countertops.
@Hoggirl , love the backsplash, but I feel like the wood looks heavy. But some people like that look.
This has the look I want…our granite is similar. I was going to do white, but I’m also going to now look for a pale grey!
That’s fair. There had been some mention of cherry cabinets, and I knew I could find a pick that mixed that (sort of) look with gray.
