Home design: is gray here to stay?

Here’s my grey kitchen. We have pale grey on the outers and dark peppercorn on the island. We have dark floors though.

I like this too!

So pretty! I wasn’t sure of the dark gray but yours looks great. I love the backsplash too. I don’t think that the floors are too dark at all. I’d all those medium. I wouldn’t go darker than that- we have a dog who sheds terribly and it’s awful on dark dark floors.

That’s a great remodel!! I love that “rounded” cabinet.

Thank for the compliments! We have an old Tudor and took our inspiration from the built ins in the dining and living rooms and matched the original floors.

The subway tiles have an antique crackle finish on them that you can’t see in the photos at al.

That’s my dream kitchen! Absolutely perfect! :heart_eyes:

That’s so nice to hear. Thank you! It’s going on 4 years old now and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Pick what you like, unless you’re planning on selling soon. You’re living there.

Personally I detest gray, indoors or out - reminds me too much of the Soviet Block era. Any house with gray or stainless isn’t going to be at the top of my list to buy if there’s a better (to me) alternative, so you can’t really even predict what to do if you’re selling TBH, so I stick with my advice of picking what you like - then hoping any potential buyer does too.

@momofboiler1 , that’s gorgeous!

Speaking of subway tiles with a finish of some sort… if you get normal ceramic ones, the color will be true. But if you get glass ones, they may look different on the wall because of the glue, the wall color, the light, etc. Ones that looked white with a hint of Grey may appear slightly green, or very Grey, etc. Ask me how I know this… :wink:

Even ceramic tiles look different colors in different light…and paint too. (I like my kitchen best in full sunlight). Grout color can make a big difference too in the look of the tile.

For me, if I’m going to chose gray I want people to look at it and say “gray” - whether it’s somewhat light or a mid gray. I don’t want it to be looked at and say “is that a white or a gray”? Or dirty!!! :slight_smile:

Yes, @momofboiler1 is right. Even paint looks different in different light!

And totally with you @abasket. The glass tiles are super tricky in this regard. And the difference wasn’t subtle! (Okay, also disappointing!)

I love a dark gray or navy/royal island with white cabinets. These are being shown in a number of high end builder models here in Florida. Also seeing the trend of the hardware going towards brass with high end white appliances. If the area is open to living/dining area and especially with a vaulted ceiling and you will be painting with a white or pale gray, I would consider the island be painted a darker color that you like. It will help to define the area and add a pop of color.

@abasket, I get what you mean about whites/greys!!
Picking the paint for our cabinets kept me tossing in my sleep many nights! I know, definitely first world.

We wanted white cabinets.
But not stark loud white like BM decorators white that we love for moldings all over our house.
Decided on BM Paperwhite and are very happy with it after one year.
To me, it looks like a white kitchen.
Just a bit softer.

I think choosing white paint is very challenging.

I like BM Alabaster I use it for almost everything that needs to be white.

"Every paint looks different in different light!’

It’s the undertones, and what it picks up from the surrounding room/windows. For example, a white with yellow undertones can look yellowish in full sunlight as it picks up the sun, or even pick up some green if the white door trim opens up to a big lawn

wrt gray: almost all have one of three undertones – blue, violet and/or green – and you can see that in momofboiler’s pix. So when picking gray, match the undertones to the floor, cabinets, countertops, etc.

I think we will use Frost White Behr paint for our cabinets. It’s a nice soft white.

Love this. :+1::+1:

Here’s my kitchen after last year’s remodel. We went with white cabinets, gray walls. We agonized over the paint color. I love it! I think the floors warm the space up, and I can introduce pops of color at any time. Still waffling on what to do with window treatments, if anything. And pay no attention to the old rug, I switched that out!

In any event, I don’t care if gray is going out of style, cuz I like it and it’s my kitchen! :blush:
