Home from Bama Bound!

^^^

Wow…really…only 30 credits! That sounds like the philosophy major, too.

Yes, with such a low req’t, it wouldn’t be that hard, especially if it’s possible to take a summer course or two at a CC to bring in 3-6 more credits!

I think that a student can only have…

2 majors and a minor

or

1 major and 2 minors

Of course, a student can technically have more than that, but not formally declared.

^^^

If a student has more than that I will formally declare him or her non compos mentis, lol. :)

^^^Oops, just got chided for my diagnostic statement above by one of my good CC friends, whose son came into UA with 65 AP credits and is now triple majoring with a minor. Now that is a horse of a different color (supreme compos mentis)!

Absent that kind of advantageous entr

My DS did get credit for the AP govt class from high school that took care of the first polysci requirement. I do think he will be able to double major. I would like for him to specialize in a business major, but we’ll see. That may be asking too much. I’m anxious to get his information loaded into degree works so we can get a better idea. I realize that won’t be until late July or maybe even early August. Guess that’s a good question for the veterans here. Will they have the AP credit loaded before the fall semester begins???

Yes, all AP credit will be loaded into the Alabama system before the fall semester. College Board sends the scores electronically July 1.

We are trying to decide whether or not I should go with H and S to June 1 Bama Bound. This is the second trip for both but I have never been there. Is it worth for me to ask for a 2-day leave from work to join them? I will be dropping off S in Aug. but there are no other parent activities then, so I’m wondering whether I should try and get to Bama on June 1st. Any thoughts?

If you can swing it, I would suggest you go to Bama Bound with your H and S. That way you will be able to see campus before move in and get a better idea of what your S should bring. There might be a parent send-off breakfast after move-in day, but Bama Bound is a much better time, IMHO for a parent to visit UA than move-in day. Plus, you can use it (somewhat) of a date night for you and your H.

Malanai and m2ck, in my experience students can declare as many majors and minors as they desire, but eventually we are encouraged to do lots of study abroad and/or get a master’s degree at the same time. :)

The only advice I would give about coming with your son and husband is IF they have already registered, don’t try to register after you get there. I got off work at the last minute to go with my husband and son. I went in at bamabound and asked where I could register. After some to do, they took my $50 and gave me a $7 meal card for lunch. That was it…You didn’t have to be registered to attend the meetings and such. SOOOOO just come and don’t worry about registering. It COULD be different with the overnight stays if you are planning to stay on campus. The early honors was just a one day thing…

Thanks, SEA_tide. I bet my impression of Alabama would be different, just dropping my S off in Aug. than actually going through the orientation program, where I would meet Dr. Sharpe and be informed of details that will affect the next 4 years of S’s life.

Always use meal plans first whenever possible, as they do not roll over to the next semester. Do not use Dining Dollars yet. Wait a semester, because unlike meal plan blocks, Dining Dollars can be rolled over to Bama Cash, which is a far more versatile currency then Dining Dollars. It’s like getting extra spending money each semester, as long as you don’t spend all your Dining Dollars the first semester.

All dining locations takes Dining Dollars, Bama Cash, cash, and credit/debit. If you pay with your ACT card, the cashier will always ask if you’re paying with Dining Dollars or Bama Cash. Unfortunately, vending machines take Dining Dollars if you have any before they will take Bama Cash, so try and use cash for them.

Again…the Smart Card does the figuring for you. You don’t have to tell anyone anything.

Fall semester unused meals DO rollover to the next semester, but not to the next year. So, it is important to try to use all of your meals by the end of the school year.

*If you pay with your ACT card, the cashier will always ask if you’re paying with Dining Dollars or Bama Cash. *

The card will deduct from Dining Dollars first at retail dining locations. There’s no reason for it not to. If you’re at a meal plan dining location, it will deduct from meal plan first.

Hmm…I’ve always been asked which account I want to use. Either way, you can tell that cashier which account to use.

One more thing to add. When we opened my DS’s checking account at the Alabama Credit Union in the Ferg, the teller we were working with said that in the other orientations people would have to wait for up to an hour or more! We sort of ducked out of one of the meetings in which we were familiar with the process and went to open the account. The teller said that there is normally a break where everyone comes at once. So, if you get a chance to go at an odd time to open the account you will probably be better off and not have to wait. It did take us perhaps 30 minutes to set up the account and the overdraft protection.

On a second note, we also went downstairs across from the bookstore and rented a post office box at the post office. It was $46 for the year. Not positive that my DS will need a PO box, but we have one just in case. What do the veterans and students think about the need for a po box??? Thought we might need it since we are OOS…

not all that much use for mail these days! mostly the only important mail we get is bills!

but i guess it might be good to have. maybe a suite could share one?

does the credit union charge a fee?

is there a good reason to have an account there instead of just keeping an account at home?

in the olden days, merchants liked local checks only, but nowadays, don’t kids just use a debit card mostly?

Mike the credit union was “free” for everything. You are probably right and may should have kept his account at home…The only advantage I can think of is cash advances at an ATM. I know alot of ATMs charge you a fee. The credit union has 6 atms on and off campus with no charges. Not really a huge deal. But like I said, there were no charges for the account.

i guess having a local bank account would be good if the student was going to have a job. you know, to deposit paychecks.

: )

We opened an account with Alabama Credit for several reasons.

One, we belong to one in Virginia, and because of an arrangement between credit unions, I can easily wire a transfer into that account.

Second, Alabama Credit is in the Ferg, and kids are always in the Ferg. My son has another account with another bank, but he has to go find a branch to do his banking. This way, he is in the Ferg on a daily basis, so he can take care of any money matters there.

Third, Alabama Credit gives kids the option of opening a credit card account. Normally, I would nix this, but the limit is just $300. It gives a student a chance to establish credit at a young age without being able to buy freely.

As for a post office box, my son just renewed his. Yes, he gets mail, too. From his family. His grandparents. Some of his friends. He thinks it’s pretty cool to get those cards and letters from home. One friend sent him bubbles – inside joke, I guess. He got cookies from his kid brother and me.

I’m guessing my son will need a PO Box to receive his magazine subscriptions. Besides which, sending little care packages will be fun.

Electronic contact is awesome and efficient, but there’s still something to be said for things that are tangible. :)

Malanai: How does your son feel about pancakes at 2 a.m.?

If he’s like mine, a gift card to IHOP is very appreciated. So is the one to Qdoba.

That’s what the post office box is for.
