Home to Long Island from UD

Other than Amtrack does anyone know of other ways to get home from UD to the south shore of Long Island?

That’s where we are. UD Catch a Ride (bus) 3 different campus locations (Laird, Rod/Dick, Perkins) to various stops on the LIE (Manhasset, Melville) and I think somewhere in Smithtown. So you just need to get picked up at a stop along the LIE. This is for Thanksgiving and Spring Break. I think they only go to the city at other times.

thanks for this info… had no idea about this bus. not super close to my house but about as close as the amtrak station and half the price.

Are there any locations/facebook pages, etc… for car pools home? I know there are easily 50 kids at UD that live within 15 mins of our home. does anyone know if anything like this is out there?

We absolutely swear by Catch-a-Ride.

lefty: the easy thing about Catch a Ride is that you don’t have to lug your stuff through Grand Central or Penn Station. Just out to the campus stop and into the car when you get back to LI. I just got an email from Catch a Ride that their 2012-2013 schedules are up now.

Can’t help re: message boards on campus. My DD wouldn’t get a ride from someone she doesn’t know.

so excited to learn about this, the seacacus, NJ stop is about 30 mins away! That is so great that they pick up around campus. Although I see not every stop on every run it’s still so close. I had been looking into mega bus and bolt but neither come near UD. Now I know why. lol… It’s a nice option to have for D when I can’t make the ride down to get her! :)

D was wondering if the busses have wi fi? It doesn’t look like they do from the site but I figure I’d ask here! :)

lefty: they might… DD not home this summer but I will ask her when I speak with her. One of the other bus companies (Mega or Bolt) were going to come to UD, but Catch a Ride petitioned against them this summer and, I guess, won. Anyway, we’ve used Catch a Ride for two years and have no complaints.

I’ll ask my D about WiFi. I don’t think it’s ever come up for her because she always brings so much stuff home that she couldn’t possibly use the computer.

Back in my day, students would post rides on a piece of paper and stick it on a bulletin board somewhere.
People would take rides with strangers all the time (When Harry Met Sally, The Sure Thing).
I had a car and gave rides to people that I had never met.
At least now, one can Google or Facebook about the other person beforehand. There are no “stangers” anymore.
