Because I live extremely close to campus, and my parents are paying for tuition, they don't want to send me to the dorms.
I would like to stay on campus (at least my first year), but do you guys have any arguments I could make to convince my parents?

Please give me good advice!

(For those who don't know, it is possible to complete an exemption form even though the UIUC website says that all freshman are required to stay on campus their first year)

Why do you want to stay on campus? What arguments do you have already?

As for staying home, that is the obvious better choice. Free housing, great food, no sharing rooms with a stranger, no sharing a bathroom w/ everyone on a floor, cleaner lifestyle and independence to study/sleep/do what you want. If your house is less than 10 minutes away, there really is no logical way you can argue to pay >$10k to live in the dorms.

You can’t say there’s no logical reason to live in dorms instead of your home, how about the friends you’ll make? How about the experiences you’ll have? How about learning how to live with someone? There are benefits to both living on campus and in your home, and it’s certainly not as clear-cut as you make it yimster.

You can make friends w/o living in the same place. Actually most of your friends will be the ones you share classes and participate in ECs with, not the ones you live with. What exactly are those “experiences” are worth >10K?? And as learning how live on your own/with someone, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do that once you have a job and start a family. Or just do a summer camp outside of Illinois. Or study abroad for a semester. But there is no good reason to get out of a comfortable, close, and clean living environment for the dorms.

Ok, I think myopinion02 has a valid point. I really wanted to gain experience in living in the dorms (or in other words have fun), but the costs associated with room and board is too much.

Also, my parents just now told me that I need to pay for the costs for room and board myself, and I don’t think it will be worth it. I would rather focus on my studies than waste my time working to earn money to pay for a living space that I don’t need to be living in.

If anyone else has any opinions, it would be a great time to post it, but I’m going with staying at home.
