Homecoming, mums?

So this southern mom has spent too much time up north, is out of touch. Homecoming is coming up, fraternity pledge son has a date for the game. Do the boys still buy their dates mums for homecoming games??

i think that is just a high school thing, but i don’t know for sure.

That is a Texas thing. Asking these Non Texas folks about a Homecoming Mum will only encounter bewildered looks. ;)

BTW, I was at the wholesale place the other day buying all of the mum making supplies to make my hs DD her first Homecoming Mum. I took pictures so that I can figure out how to download them on her to show some exactly the madness that goes on in these stores.

We had mums for homecoming at my North Carolina college back in the eighties, but I do agree – when I spoke of them to my midwestern friends, I received curious looks. They are HUGE in Texas. :)

“HUGE” is an understatement! If I could only post pics of some of the ones I’ve been seeing this year. HIDEOUS!

google is your friend … https://www.google.com/search?q=texas+homecoming+mums&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=U_hKUru-Hpio4AO4q4C4Ag&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=618&dpr=1

So I have to ask … when are these worn … to the game? to school that day? to the dance? And why so huge?

They wear them to school on game day and then to the game.

I have no clue why some make them so friggin huge!

I think the homecoming mum tradition has fallen to the wayside at Alabama.

I haven’t seen them at college homecomings either, and I’m in Texas. I had never seen them before we moved here. Some are ridiculously huge, and some girls have more than one. Not sure how they don’t tip over!

Just had a huge mum making party this weekend and my house is covered in hot glue and glitter! Ahhhh, I just LOVE the fall!

SMB, can I send you my supplies?
My kitchen table is covered in mum making supplies. DH has just come to realize that this time of year the kitchen table is not for eating meals. Then there is the Homecoming jeans. A few schools do those, some don’t. The Homecoming overalls are a whole nother thing, our school does not do them, whew!

Haha, I’ll take any supplies I can get! My son is just a freshman so I have a few more years ahead! And don’t even get me started on the whole senior mum thing. We do the overalls and that’s a project that lasts at least two months! When I was done with my D’s, I wanted to tell her she couldn’t ever wear them! I didn’t want anything to happen to MY overalls, lol.

hmm … homecoming overalls … https://www.google.com/search?q=texas+homecoming+jeans&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ohNMUtfqNYP09gSNkID4Ag&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=618&dpr=1#q=texas+homecoming+overalls&tbm=isch

But … if you have a HUGE homecoming mum doesn’t it cover your homecoming overalls? The overalls look kind of fun.
