Hi! Does anyone know how Brown evaluates homeschool applicants, and if there’s any preferential or deferential thought that goes into their evaluation?
Test scores and grades from outside institutions (online AP courses, community college, etc) are a bit more important, since they’re the best indicator of your academic caliber. I think it’s also important to really do something with your time and show that you did a lot outside homeschooling (volunteering, work, sports, other ECs).
Thank you both for your responses. I am definitely very involved in my community through social justice and other initiatives, which seems to be pretty important for Brown, but I am just concerned that many of the classes I took did not have an AP or other qualitative grade. All of the classes I did were with tutors or other independent programs, but I just don’t know how much that will actually count.
In the additional information section of my application I wrote a short paragraph about how I was unable to take most AP classes because I am homeschooled. My college counselor told me to do this and said that the lack of AP classes would not count against me as they are used to homeschooled students. Just make sure your SATS/ACTS are very high. You should submit your SAT II’s, even though this is optional. Will let you know if I get in later this week.
Yes, please let me know what happens @geugen. I am planning to apply RD if I don’t get into my top pick ED, and am very curious to hear what your impressions have been on the application process for a homeschooler at Brown.
