Homework...is it optional?

Does anyone know how homework is "graded"? I would imagine the policies change by class/professor--does anyone know how things might work in a specific class?

It depends on the professor. Most classes will be run on the point system. Therefore, it’s graded just like in high school. However, some professors give homework but dont include it into the grade (doesnt mean you dont do it). Ive been in classes where it was included into the participation grade, and some classes with 4 tests being the only grades. It purely rests with the professor.

In general homework is less frequent but also less optional. Each prof will give you a syllabus at the beginning of the course which details their grading and that will help you figure out what to focus on.

Depends on the teacher.

Yes it depends – however, almost universally, homework is less heavily weighted than in high school. It’s usually worth just enough points so that it hurts your grade if you don’t do it, but it really doesn’t help your grade all that much if you do well. What I mean is, if you have low test scores, homework isn’t going to improve your grade very much.

Basically what everyone said. In CSE 142, homework is around 50%. In one of my math classes, I think homework was around 12% of my grade.

As everyone said, 100% depends on the teacher

However…
My theory class grade was: 30% midterm, 30% final, 20% 1-10 page paper, 10% participation

Although that 1 paper was the only “homework” i had all quarter, it was worth 20%. Regardless of how many assignments “homework” consists of…I find that 20% of the grade consists of homework (In my experience)
