I heard that in some classes your GSI determines your grade. So do the professors give out homework or do your GSIs give out homework?

Yeah in practically ALL your undergraduate courses (at least lower division) your professor "assigns" the homework. You do them; your GSI grades them; your GSI grades your midterms/final, and ta-da gives you your grade as well.

do humanities courses have a lot of homework?

Um, a lot of reading (but depends). I'd say history and political science majors have the most reading. But other majors' readings, like say philosophy, is less quantitatively, but requires more thinking.

The only true "homework" that you have to turn in are essays (which could be 3 to 5 a semester). However in discussion groups, led by GSIs, they ask questions regarding the previous night's reading. So you definitely should read.

The rest of your grade comprises of midterms (2 usually, or sometimes 1, or 3), and the final (which could be 45% of your grade).
