So I'm going into my senior year and am wondering if it is even worth applying to UPENN early decision...

GPA u/w: 3.15 w: 3.75
SAT: 1530/1600 (790 M, 740 CR) 800s on the MATH II, Chem and Bio
I had a pretty bad slump Sophomore year, I got like a 2.9
I have taken all honors and AP classes, including a total of 7 science classes and 5 Math classes... I have four years of everything else otherthan language inwhich I have 3.

I am getting a recommendation from my AP chem teacher who went to UPENN and I'm very very confident its going to be an excellent rec.

My EC's are OK... 4 years of a varsity sport, a very small bit of community service, Calculus II at BU (which I got an A in) and I'm planning on taking more classes my senior year at Harvard Extension.

I'm from a extremely competitive public highschool and from what I can tell has that reputation.

So what are my chances (if they exist) and is there anything I can do to raise them at this point?

The disparity between your GPA and SAT makes you look like a major slacker, which is something colleges don't want. Unless you have a compelling reason for why you did so bad, I don't think you've got much of a chance.

This is what one Ivy officer told me: People ask me which wouldl we rather have high scores or high GPAs. The answer is both. Sorry, bud but I think they can find people who have stellar scores and GPAs and still have the luxury of rejecting them, so what makes you any better?

CC: I assume a student with a 4.2 GPA (all A's) at one of the most competitive high schools in the nation - a well known magnet school - 10/11 AP's - completion of BC Calc by 11th grade - also bio, chem, english, history, ap, etc, - a number of state level academic awards - an additional national level academic - member of state championship team with good prospects to compete in college - 2380 combined on sat - writes extraordinarily well - and the typical other good EC's - would be in the thick of things at UPenn or any of the other Ivies? No URM status, however. I say this because admission at any of this schools these days is a lottery, or so it seems.

What I was hoping on is the fact that when you look at a list of the people who got into and rejected from UPENN from my school (we use this program called naviance, it shows u/w gpa and SAT scores) there seems to be very little correllation between the people accepted and GPA.... as in, everyone who got in had over a 1490, but the GPAs ranged from 2.8-4.0 (and I don't mean only one person got in with a 2.9, I mean there are acceptances over the range)

So yeah, I dunno, I was hoping I had a shot... Could anyone else recommend me a more realistic school? I am primarily interested in Business and also a little in science.

Thanks a lot guys.... even though the news was less then stellar.

For business..wow, there's a lot.
Georgetown
Cornell
UofMichigan
NYU
UCLA
USC
Vandy
UT of Austin
These are just a quick few target schools that I picked in the span of 10 seconds. Expand; there's a lot more schools than you think.

Emory University has a very good undergrad business program and has one of the better known graduate business schools in the country. Emory is in the south, of similar caliber to Vanderbilt, and around 30-40% acceptance rate.
