Area of Concentration/Major/Career Plans:
Planning to Major in Accounting, Political Science or History. Aspiring to become an IP Lawyer or Corporate Lawyer

Thanks!

If you want to be an IP lawyer, you need to major in a natural or technical science so you are eligible to sit for the patent bar exam.

Otherwise, you will need to pursue alternative qualifications to sit for that exam such as taking some science/technology courses, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, or some other options.

Also…you should consider interning at a law firm to see what the actual practice of law is like.

As for whether to apply to NYU or not, you should ask whether your family/you can afford it as NYU tends to give very little FA/scholarship money.

I asked my family and they said after looking at the sticker price they can be able to pay most of it

Look at this to see the USPTO requirements to sit the patent bar: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/oed/grb0210.pdf

As for paying most of the sticker price, can you cover the rest comfortably with scholarships or loans? Especially considering you will have more debt from law school which can run around $200k+?

Thanks for the link… my parents are totally can cover the amount they cannot pay with loans and they are comfortable with that… my parents aer paying for my law school or will try to pay most of it as well

Also, do you have a list of other colleges?

I ask because your SAT scores may be slightly low considering what I heard from friends who applied to NYU over the last few years. Also, being South Asian will not help very much IME as they are often lumped in with other “Asians” and thus, are considered overrepresented minorities.

A reason why one high school classmate whose Indian family migrated to East Africa before coming to the US placed himself down as an “African-American” for the purpose of increasing his college admission chances.

On the other hand, the fact you are from Texas may be a plus from a geographic diversity angle.

Here are the other colleges I am applying to: Fordham University, Southern Methodist University [SMU], Baylor, UT Austin, Texas A&M, George Washington U, American University, Boston University, Tulane U and USC [Southern California]

Technically I am considered other in the asian category but I am assuming nonetheless they still will clump me in the asian category… I was born in the us and lived here all my life and I have been living in Texas for most of my life so yes I am from texas…

Have you considered applying to Oberlin or other SLACs?

I’m not sure what stats are required nowadays…but back when I was applying, Oberlin and NYU had a similar level of difficulty from my high school.

Also, how well do you regard UT-Austin?

Heard plenty of great things about that school and if you do well there and ace the LSAT with a 170+, you’ll definitely have a great shot at UT-Austin’s law school as well as the T-14 law schools…including NYU.

UT Austin is highly regarded in my book… I got accepted last week and my brother goes there now… its my safety school though… I like the academics and surroundings very much and I heard great things as well… should i just scrap NYU and wait for grad school to apply?

["UT Austin is highly regarded in my book… I got accepted last week and my brother goes there now… its my safety school though… I like the academics and surroundings very much and I heard great things as well… should i just scrap NYU and wait for grad school to apply? "]

If you can max out your undergrad GPA at UT-Austin and ace the LSAT by scoring over 170/180, you’ll be in a great position to get into a T-14 law school…including NYU.

Also, do an internship in a law firm to see if the actual practice of law is right for you.
There’s many aspects of working in law firms that mass media on popular culture don’t cover very well.

Just from the perspective of a current Stern undergrad, your SATs and APs are fairly substandard to the average here. People don’t like reporting anything less than 4s, some will report only 5s. 650+ in each SAT section is considered low, 700+ is average-ish.

You won’t get any sort of URM status for being Sri Lankan. They’ll consider that simply as Asian, and since we’re already 69% Asian, I doubt that will be to your favor at all. Your extracurriculars are solid though.
