I'm a freshman at Syracuse University and enrolled in the Newhouse School of Communications, as a Journalism major. Not all that thrilled with Syracuse as a whole. Looking to transfer, still as a journalism major, to:

*NYU (CAS) (didn't apply to in HS)
*Boston College (CAS) (was wait-listed first time I applyed as a senior in HS)
Fordham (didn't apply to in HS)
Boston University (didn't apply to in HS)
TCNJ (accepted in HS)
Rutgers (didn't apply to in HS)

My #1 choice is Boston College then NYU. My first semester gpa was 3.4. My highschool gpa was 4.6, ranked 25/255, SAT's were 2010/2400. I'm Asian, if that matters at all..My reccomed. comes from a highly respected professor in the Newhouse school.

Any thoughts on my chances at these colleges? Any more information I should tell to help your opinion? Thanks.

You have pretty fair shots at most of these. I'd say Bc and NYu are iffy, since I know NYU states that a 3.5 is recommended...though you are close. SAT's are pretty good, though high school record will also be taken into consideration. I'd say in at TCNJ and Rutgers, probably also at Fordham and BU.

On the BC supplemental form they ask if you've previously applied and what year, etc.. But I'm not sure. I'm not banking on my continued interest as a plus to get in. And yeah, I pretty much think BU, Fordham, TCNJ, RU are easily acceptable for me. I guess I'm really wondering about BC and NYU. I can't take Syracuse anymore..

Syracuse has, for a lack of a nicer word, an incompetent student body. The single reason I came to Syracuse was for Newhouse and it's been everything I've expected it to be. But the level of ignorance, stupidity, foolishness from the students on this campus is too much to handle. I didn't leave high school to come to high school. True, everybody says wherever you are you'll find these kids. In Syracuse, there's an abundance of them.

And Syracuse is one-dimensional. Yeah, I party here and there but it's the ONLY thing kids do here. Nothing else. And I've realized I'm a city kid. NYU/Boston are vastly superior/entertaining to Syracuse.

I go to Boston University and work in the student records office, so I see the college applications/credentials -- based on yours, I'd say you'd fit fine. I didn't want to turn this into a conversation about Syracuse, but I'm curious about some of it because my girlfriend got in (it was one of her safeties), and she's pretty excited about it -- it does seem like a beautiful place. Another one of our friends got into Newhouse -- she's pumped. I hope they both find intelligent circles of friends to escape the slackeyed masses. :P

There seems to be an abundance of the same type at BU -- I also don't want to suspect that it may just be average ;/ hopefully you'll find a more versatile student body at one of the schools you're applying to. I'm trying to transfer as well, partially for the same reason, and partially because I've discovered that I'm not so much the city kid (from New Hampshire, for crying out loud).

The party scene at Syracuse -- does EVERYONE party, essentially? Or do many prefer social outings? Just wondering if it's that intense.

shmatt- I feel you. I'm trying to transfer out of UDel. for the same reasons. The professors and history program are great and I have no complaints, but many other areas, including the incompetent student body, turn me way off.

rainmanoutofsnow I also attend Syracuse University and I would say the party scene is more of out a lack of what the city of Syracuse can offer. From my experience and maybe shmatt might having a differing opinion but people drink because they have no other thing to do. If drinking isn't up your alley or drinking constantly so you're wasted then most of the party scene here won't fit you. If maybe you want to explore or if someone were to want to explore other things to do, Syracuse is somewhat limited in offering options as the bus system here sucks major butt. However the campus is beautiful in spring and it is a good place to experience the college life.

Shmatt I think you have a decent shot at BC or NYU but for the others you have an excellent shot. Good luck!
