I think you'll be blessed with a very hard decision to make next April...

You look like a typical Asian applicant to me...Also, Amherst isnt a safety for anyone and UNC (OOS I assume?) is extremely difficult to get into and very hard to judge.

typical applicant just because i play the piano? yes, most asians play an instrument, but most don't go on to win international competitions and solo with orchestras. also, i'm in student gov and class prez, which most asians don't usually do....well i'm just trying to be my own person and let my individuality show through my essays

im getting tired with all this asian bs. who cares if if shes an asian? no admission officer is that racist.

You'd be surprised...

Obviously you have your mind made up about your chances. I think it would be wise if you went to the various school discussion boards and looked up the threads on who got in and who didn't. They exists on every top school here on CC. It might open your eyes a little when you see the results.

bandit, All top schools don't have their results posted as important though so it makes it hard to find. I have tried to search them but have been unsuccessful. I am looking for the class of 2010 and 2011 for Yale, Princeton, and the University of Chicago.

Sure, the student government helps... but, even though you want to show off the piano thing, definitely talk about other stuff in your essays... sorry, but musical talent is pretty standard. For Stanford EA, your tests scores probably won't need to go up... I knew an asian with a 2020 SAT who got in from out of state at a crappy high school, so you shouldn't retake. Even though Harvard might like better, they suggest you don't take more than twice. Don't concentrate on SATs, concentrate on ECs.

As for chances, they're pretty good, 50-50 at the top schools, and slightly better at EA Stanford. If you live in CA, you're probably 80% chance of getting in. Just show them who you really are in the essays and good luck!

Not even close to 50-50 and 80% is ludicrous. That's reserved for curing cancer essentially.

UNC isn't that hard to get into, especially for her... lots of people from my school go to UNC each year with SAT scores ranging from the 1700's to the 1900's. But then again, I'm in state so...Idk.

I think chances threads are really depressing, so I suggest going out there and focusing more on your EC's like someone up there said. Don't worry too much about your SAT score, I think it's really good. It's certainly within the HYPS range in my opinion.

haha i agree with you, spiffystars...it is kinda depressing with this chances thread. i hope you best of luck with the ivies! amherst is also a really good liberal arts schoo...have u also considered university of chicago? i hope u get into yale!! who knows, we might see each other there next fall!

UNC OOS is completely different and more difficult than In State.

.....bump......

thanks =)
wow...why are there so many ppl with nearly perfect SAT scores rejected??

asians in student government isn't weird at all - atleast for me it isn't. our class president 10,11, and 12 was asian.

well would being president 9-11 grades demonstrate significant leadership involvement?

i think you have a very good chance at any school you apply for .. good luck :)

you do fit the mold of stereotypical asian mold because of your ecs. but don't let that hamper your decisions -- you stand out because you excel in what you do more than other typical asians.

and this is coming from an asian. :)

Oh for Christ's sake, enough with this Asian Piano thing already. You want to talk about stereotypes? Turn around and start looking at all the white kids doing hospital volunteering or sports. We have a far easier time affording white people a personality, it seems.
