not really! the US dollar is pegged to the HK dollar......................sucks in times like these! hahaha

thanks for the advice.

my other option is Peking University. Is that the same as Beijing University? They've established a joint center on international studies with the University of California, so that's what I would do if I didn't go to Hong Kong. My mom is from Macau and always talks about how good Hong Kong University is... around the same level as UC Berkeley (!). So that's why I want to go there, and my study abroad counselor told me it's the most popular HK school. But when I tell my mom that I want to study abroad there, she says it's not worth it....

But the other thing is, I speak near-fluent Cantonese. I thought I'd like to keep the language or be exposed to native speakers. That's one reason why I'm considering studying in HK.

i can see why your mom thinks its not worth it... the tuition of berkeley is like 10 times more expensive than that of HKU (maybe i'm exaggerating a bit but you know what i mean). a fd of mine from HK goes to Beijing U and she told me intl students tend to stick together becoz of language problem. but if you speak Catonese (or actually even English) its really easy to mix with local students. you'd find HK students and students at Beijing U VERY different cuz BU students are like the creme de la creme of the whole country and naturally they're ultra smart, ultra hard working and ultra competitive. its less so in HK and students are more into club activities and think its important to have fun... so... come to HK! its an amzing place (i sound like im working for the tourism board or sth hahaha)

what's the best time to study in hong kong? i know its extremely hot in the summer. when does the semester start, and would the weather still be very hot during that time? also, when's monsoon season?

so i take it that HK rocks but if i'm doing study abroad, i should pick beijing u?

To hit the books--> Beijing U
To hit the town--> HKU :) :)

the semester starts in Sep, and basically its kinda similar to colleges in the US. Im not too sure if there's a monsoon season in HK, but i guess whats closest to it would be summer time during July n August. Sep will still be hot, but then soon it cools off a bit in Oct and HK doesnt have a chilling winter. at most the temperature drops to somewhere like 5-6C and thats it.

it really depends on what kinda experience you want. HK's a vibrant city and there's ALWAYS sth goin on. if you come to HK to study you can expect to spend a whole lota time off campus with your fds. basically being in HK means to be in touch with the world, at least thats how i see it. Not sure abt life in Beijing, but its more likely that the academic atmosphere is more intense at Beijing U and if you wanna learn Mandarin its def the place to go. i'd say that HK students are prob more street smart while Chinese students are more book smart. really depends on which kind you prefer.

Can't agree more with jurily. HK's more cosmopolitan while in Beijing you'll get a better feel of the "traditional Chinese" atmosphere. They're completely different, but you can't go wrong with either.

haha thanks so much for the advice! man, it's sorta like picking between berkeley and UCLA. oh well, i'll have time to decide =)

After living in Hong Kong and New York City, I feel that NYC is 10000 times more the city for Gays and Bisexuals. I never heard or feel that Hong Kong is such a place.

And neither have I.

no idea where diu9lei got that idea from

If so, you are gay too I bet.

LOL I actually find diu9lei's posts rather entertaining. :D Nice effort in trying to start a flame war.

then get outa the HK thread

Hm... judging by all the other posts diu9lei has posted so far, everything written is meant to be a flame. Oh dear me, or is it just the 99.5% of the posts? Did I get my numbers wrong?

Please, everyone chill. Let's not waste time over this type of people.

I know many white people here is US also good at Cantonese foul language. So it's my fault, diu9lei, it is possible that you are not from Hong Kong but know cantonese foul language.
diu9nei ar, mr. diu9nei

Maybe there are also transgender people in HK such that they are no longer gay after they change their sex.

haha was that ignorance or a hate post? nevermind, it's both, altho the post has been deleted...but saying that is just like saying san fran is the city for gay/bi as well, what a stereotype. furthermore, HK ppl are probably more homophobic than your average american state...or perhaps not homophobic but definitely less open about it. it's still quite a stigma in hong kong....

Haha so glad we got that one out of the way. :) :)

yea XDDDDD
