I am just wondering, how good is Hong Kong University's academic quality. Which majors are good in HKU? How prestigious is it and how recognized and respected is it in the international community?

Do you with in the US or globally? perhaps it will be helpful if you provided more info on where do you think you'll have to use your degree.

I think it is reputable only within HK, and maybe just in the region. I do not know (or think) there are many SE asians applying there though.

agree w/ jkh. its gd if you wanna stay in hk.

The student body is diverse, in a sense that there are some really good students, whereas there are also some not-so-good students.
The faculty of medicine is reputable also internationally (well, not as reputable as JHU or harvard), many overseas universities join the HKU medicine faculty for research and other sort of things. I know recently there's a HKU - Yale University Bioinformatics workshop. and hku is in the frontiers of genomics research and is a participant of the International Haplotype Mapping Project.

the dental faculty is the only dental school teaching in english in china and the law faculty is reputable in the region.

Well that's all i knowww.....

If you are into business and those sort of things, maybe you should look into HKUST.

yeah... im apply to HKU for Economics...
as backup actually...
i wonder whether is it good ?
I just taking advatage the fact that its in china...

Yeah, you only want to apply there owing to the fact that it's in China.I did use it as a backup school and I got in.But I didn't head there cuz I don't think it's worth the four years.Hong Kong for college? No way!

HKU is actually very very very well respected in Asia. In the world university rankings it was ranked at no. 39 ahead of Brown, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, UBC, Warwick, Kings College and many other top institutions.

waryap...just wondering, where u from?

Did you say it's ranked ahead of Brown,Dartmouth,Georgetown?Well, authorities in the academics and media are questioning the credibility of the rankings published by the Financial Times.Peking University ahead of Columbia University,no way!

Im from malaysia....but have been studying in singapore

yeah so my cantonese should be not bad :P

I started this thread, but I was just wondering how good it is because I am considering studying abroad at either HKU or Peking University, and I want the best experience possible.

Also, my mom, who is from Macau (near Hong Kong), always talks about how good and selective HKU is and that it could be better than UC Berkeley. But whenever I say I want to study abroad there, she changes her mind and says HKU is only regarded as good by people in Hong Kong.
