My D. got an invitation to apply for Honor College Discovery Fellows Program.
Is anybody participating in this program? Especially in Journalism major? Eight hours a week seems to me a lot..

I’m planning on applying for the program and double majoring in journalism/biochemistry if I do go to MU. High school research assistants usually need to commit to at least 12 hours a week before they’re even considered, so 8 hours is actually pretty good. I think when you weigh in the other benefits like faculty contact and research (or I guess some other activity for journalism) it’s well worth the 8 hours a week.

I was in Discovery Fellows my freshman year as a Journalism major. The experience was… mixed, but beneficial. I met and got to know one of the top Journalism professors at Missouri. That alone is quite an impressive privilege. In fact, let me repeat that: I WAS ON A FIRST NAME BASIS WITH ONE OF THE TOP JOURNALISM PROFESSORS AT THE TOP JOURNALISM SCHOOL THANKS TO DISCOVERY FELLOWS.

The actual research portion was hazy. The demands were either vague for or way out of the league of a freshman J-major. (ex. look up information on the Amish, figure out how to set up out-of-date webcams around campus and have them feed constant images to a webpage). Not much was accomplished and my timesheet became sparse as the semester went on… but that did not seem to bother anyone. I heard similar comments from my peers.

Overall, I would recommend the program. It seems like it would work better for science majors (do this experiment, report results), but there are still many things a J-major can get out of it as well. Perhaps you get out of it what you put in.
