Honor College/Merit award

My D (out of state), was just accepted EA/VIP. Does this mean she is automatically in the Honor's college? When do we find out about merit awards. Finally how much does UVM cost, out of state? thanks you.

1) no
2) with your admission letter
3) alot; but you can google that…

Mindy, VIP just stands for Vermont In Person and means that you visited. It has no relation to merit aid or the Honors college. You will receive information in the mail about honors and or merit. Sometimes it comes with admission letters and some schools send it a bit later - January - after they take a look at all of their candidates. It may say on the website how it works at UVM.

Get acquainted with the UVM website, there is a tab for tuition and room/board costs as well as aid.

thank you.It seems like there should be a definitive answer about when UVM lets students about when they are in the honors college.

If you cannot find it on the website, you can always email admissions and I am sure they will know.

I’m a VIP and I’ve never even been to Vermont so I don’t think that’s what it stands for…
but the rest of the information is true

A snipit from the website describing what VIP is:

"Vermont In Person (VIP) Days

September 19, 26, 2011
October 17*, 24, 31, 2011
November 7, 2011
*Note: This program date is now full."

From UVM admissions web site…Some students have been invited to apply as VIP candidates. We select students who have shared information with us including standardized test scores, self-reported grades, and interest in UVM. We include those students who visited the UVM campus in their Junior year prior to mid-August 2011. Those invited receive an e-mail invitation in early September to apply using the Common Application by November 1, 2011, as a VIP candidate. Benefits include the $55 application fee waiver, a rolling decision that is non- binding, and notification by mid-December.

VIP means Vermont In Person, but it is also a different type of application that provides rolling admission to students invited to be a VIP. You are not automatically invited into the honors college. I have heard that the honors college invitation as well as merit awards will come in the mail a few weeks after your official acceptance letter. And out of state it is around $50,000 but you can get the exact information on their website. Hope this helps!

Thanks all for the clarification!. 50k out of state sounds high, but I will check it out!

wow, I stand corrected- total costs out of state UVM 47K.

I’m EA/VIP and got accepted on Thursday, but they didn’t say anything about the honors college. My friend (also EA/VIP) got her honors college acceptance the same day and I was a little panicky because my grades/scores should definitely have gotten me in as well. I Googled around, though, and apparently UVM sends out honors college notices throughout the year, along with scholarship information. Which is quite irritating, actually…
I’m losing interest in UVM fast. The delayed notification is annoying, the OOS cost is insane, and the aid isn’t very good. Still, better than UMass :/

I got acceptance and honors college packages separately but they were both dated Nov 10th. The Honors letter included the following: “The University offers some merit scholarships, about with you will hear separately.”

When I called about merit scholarship notification they said a few weeks after acceptance letter.

When I called this week they said in January.

Has anyone heard about a merit scholarship yet?

I would think UVM would be competitive with other schools and provide merit scholarship awards by December 15th (matching EA notifications).

D’s Honors College acceptance came two weeks after her UVM acceptance. Honors College invitation stated that merit scholarship notifications will come later.

Son has a letter today with the words scholarship award enclosed on the envelope. Cannot wait until he gets home from work to see the outcome!

Mumof2… we got a letter today, too, with a very nice award. We were completely not expecting this, and what a treat! UVM is my sons number one choice, and they just sweetened the pot which I’m sure was the intent.

I hope you have similar news to report.

We also got that letter today with a nice reward. Unlike Mumof2, I opened it for my son when I saw scholarship award! No mention of honors program though. Do you have to apply separately for this?

My son received an unexpectedly high award, we are thrilled. We had heard UVM offered very little merit, so are completely thrilled!

I recieved the Presidential award today too.

UVM handed me $10k a year. I was definitely not expecting that.
