honor societies or no

An upperclassmen who is now in college once told me he didn’t put any of his honor societies on his college application. Is that the case for most of you as well?? I’m in some, but I don’t really see the point in most of them (community service yeah, but I’d say I’m involved in my community by choice even without honor societies) and I don’t really know if I want to be “meritorious” by senior year. Like, all you get is a cord anyways. And even then, it’s after college acceptances too. But some of my other friends have told me it is actually important so I’m a bit confused.

EDIT: I’m also a junior so I don’t know what the common app looks like so if anyone could enlighten me as to how much space I have and if the EC section includes summer programs/activities that would be awesome! Thanks :)!

I put my participation in NHS on my college apps, but it was near the bottom of the list because I had more meaningful volunteer work and other activities outside of NHS.

Think of it like this, When you apply to selective universities everybody is gonna have honor societies, so not being in them isnt a big deal. That being said, if you can fill up your common app without having to put honor societies awesome. Personally I wouldnt put honor societies on a college app cause colleges know they are a bunch of ****.

Your friends are wrong – 0 honor societies or 5 honor societies will have little to no bearing on college admissions.
The Common App includes space for you to name academic awards and describe your ECs.

Honor societies are considered school level honors, despite “national” being in the name of the society, since the selection process is made at the school level. So if you have a lot of higher level honors to put on your college application, such as state and national awards, then you might want to leave the honor societies off. If being a member is one of your only academic honors, however, then it is worth including it on your college application.
