honor societies

My son has received 2 "honors" invitations this week. One was from National Society of Collegiate Scholars (which I know is mainly viewed as a scam). The other is from "Sigma Alpha Lambda" which I have never heard of but claims to have a TAMU "branch".

He's hoping for med school, so I'm all for adding to his resume (even for the membership fees) but don't want to just throw money away.

Can anyone advise us? thx!

I got invited to that National Society of Collegiate Scholars and my parents wanted me to do it. I had no idea that it was even potentially questionable so I guess I will try and convince them to not join now thanks for the tip.

My son also got an invitation to Sigma Alpha Lambda. Still trying to decide if it is worth it. We are also looking to pad that resume. Here are a couple of links I got when doing a search on the TAMU website:

[Sigma Alpha Lambda | Student Activities at Texas A&M University](Sigma Alpha Lambda - Error - StuAct Online)

[Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization](http://www.salhonors.org/)

It seems like it is semi-legitimate but I don’t know how active it is. Does anyone else have any information?

It’s interesting that my son had to “approve” for me to be able to access his grades, but these organizations have access.

Junior Undergraduate Students:
The constitution intends that all chapters invite the top quarter of the Junior class (U3 classification) into membership.

Senior Undergraduate Students:
The constitution intends that all chapters invite the top third of the Senior class (U4 classification) into membership. This will include additional members who were not invited as juniors, as well as those who were invited as juniors but did not accept membership at that time.
