<p>My son received an invitation to join an honor society called "Sigma Alpha Lambda"? Is it legitimate or just a waste of money? </p>

<p>I already tossed the "National Society of Collegiate Scholars" (which I know is mainly viewed as a scam). </p>

<p>He was already offered membership in one very legit organization on campus. I was fine with paying for that one, but I couldn't really get much from the website and my son has never heard of them. He is planning on applying to med school, so a few "honors" would be good. I just don't want to throw money away.</p>

<p>Ask them what the “qualifications” are for getting in? I know of Phi Beta Kappa (for liberal arts), Beta Gamma Sigma (same qualifications as Phi Beta, but for business students), and I think there’s one for engineers that’s similar. Never heard of this one, though.</p>
