Honors Acceptances Priorities

I REALLY want to get into an honors program of some sort because from what I heard, the education you receive is very different w/ program vs w/o program.

My first choice is Dean's Honors Program. I've already been accepted into the College of Natural Science, but I don't think my stats are great enough for the DHP, which accepts 30 students each year. My second choice would be engineering honors program, and I believe they accept a lot more students for EHP. I think my stats may be good enough for EHP. Let's just say I get rejected from DHP, can I ask UT to consider me for EHP if I agree to switch my major? Has anyone ever heard anything about this type of situation?

Sorry if that was confusing, but I would really appreciate any response...

Oh, and I already created a thread about this, but while I'm talking about honors programs, I just want to ask again, when do honors acceptance letters come out? Do they call you or email you?

I think you have to be in the College of Engineering in order to be in the Engineering Honors Program.

A parent posted somewhere on this site that they got a yes letter from Plan 2 on Friday.

If i may ask you Idftalk, what are your stats? I applied to the Deans Scholars Honors program as well

My SAT is just barely above 1500 (Math & Verbal). My class rank is meh, but it’s top 10% at least. My extracurriculars and volunteering stuff suck. I have had no leadership positions EVER. So yeah, my stats are not that great, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get accepted into the program.

Can you share your stats too? I hate how DHP has practically no information about it anywhere. No acceptance rates… I have no idea how to gauge myself against other students.

Btw… Anybody know?: Can I still apply for honors housing even if I don’t known if I’m in DHP yet? Can I live in honors dorms if I’m not in honors? I heard somewhere that the answer is yes but can anyone confirm?

Good job on your SAT score haha
I used my ACT score:29
Its not that great but im in top 5% of my class and have taken all AP classes offered at my school. My extracurriculars are GREAT and my essays were very well written. I also expect that my physics teacher wrote a great recommendation. So I have no idea where I stand as far as getting accepted into the program.

I went to a UT reception not too long ago and the representative from the College of Natural Sciences said the Dean’s Scholars Program acceptance rate was quite low. She said last year they had about 900 applicants and they accepted close to 50. Thats a 5% acceptance rate :(

That’s… discouraging. :(… Particularly discouraging because this year they are taking in 30 students instead of 50. Let’s just hope that 99% of the students that apply have an SAT score below 1000 and/or a ACT score below 10… And in the bottom 10% of their class… Lol. Oh, who am I kidding… I heard that most of them are valedictorians. If you think about it, DHP at UT is harder to get into than the Ivy Leagues. -_-;

This is why I’m wondering about EHP… I actually wouldn’t mind doing EHP and switching to Cockrell or something as long as it’s an HP of some sort. Besides, I’m not really sure what I want to do with my life just yet, and an HP will probably be more motivating and provide a more nurturing environment for my growing interests.

If anyone could contribute with more answers/advice, that would be great!

An open mind is always a good one. Where did you hear that most of the accepted students are valedictorians?

I know I’ve already said this and I don’t mean to brag, but for anyone who’s interested, I got a Plan II acceptance letter today. So they’re sending now.

Congratulations man!

UT is a great school whether you are in an honors program or not. The residential Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) are nice and easier to get into than the honors programs. (Deans Honors is known for being particularly hard to get into.)

Tim739 What were your stats? My daughter is planning on applying next year.

My school ranks in a weird way; they tell universities if you’re in the top ten percent or you’re not, nothing more than that. I’m not in the top ten percent- that’s all I know. So obviously, you can be admitted to Plan II without being in the top ten percent.

My SAT scores:
CR: 730
Math: 750
Writing: 800

GPA is 97/100, I only had four ECs and I was National Merit Commended and AP Scholar. So really, not that impressive in that area.

I know the reason I got in- my essays. I wrote funny essays, they’re weren’t “intellectual”, they weren’t deriving some deep meaning out of something abstract, they were just simple and funny. If your daughter is a funny person who can write funny essays, I strongly recommend that she does that because she’ll probably get in with them. On the “write about a significant issue”, stay away from normal issues that everyone will write about like racism, abortion, gun control, capital punishment, poverty, etc etc- write about something that has personal meaning and it can be a creative or funny issue too. On the “significant person” essay, try and stay away from “my mother/father/brother/uncle/grandmother” inspired me. Only use family members or teachers if they influenced you in a really special way that the admissions staff haven’t seen before. Trust me, they’ve seen thousands of essays talking about how dedicated a teacher was and how it helped you. My advice would be to talk about a fictional character- admissions staff love that and it’s creative.

On the Plan II prompt, just be completely creative. Think of something entirely out of the box and run with it. Submit an extra resume- my friend talked to admissions staff at UT and even though they say it’s optional, they highly encourage you to submit one. Many people say write the optional Essay C if you’re not in the top ten percent- I didn’t write the essay and I got in, so don’t listen to them.

Sorry for my long tangent, I hope it helps though.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but I also applied for DSH

My Stats are:
SAT
CR-620
Math-800
Writing-580
ACT II
Physics-700
Math 2-790
Literature-620
Act-30
IB Diploma Candidate
Ranked 2/443 in my class
GPA 95/100 Unweighted and GPA 104/100 Weighted

I’m getting nervous about my SAT scores. I messed up, did not study, and I stayed out late the night before. I know my writing is ridiculously low. The thing is I haven’t gotten any letters from DHS. I turned in my application on Nov 31.

Am I getting jumpy too early? and do you think it’ll be an acceptance or a rejection for me? Honest thought please

any thoughts anyone?

It depends how much weight they assign to you two bad sections of the SAT- you’re clearly a fantastic math student. If I had to say something, I would say no, those two scores ruin your chances. I’m sorry to have to say it but I am rooting for you and I hope you get in.

my SAT/ACT are average for Plan II people (2310/34) but my GPA is complete crap…3.5 unweighted, woohoo >.> but I do go to IB so I’m hoping it’ll help haha

Yea I go to IB too, Im hoping they look past my low SAT and that IB be that factor that pushes me over

Etceterae- I got in with a lower GPA and SAT score. Don’t worry.
