honors/activities/additional info questions.

I have a few questions concerning documentation of activities/honors on the Common App.
First -- how do you document important/major honors received prior to high school?
Second-- do things you do outside of school and not as a part of any official organization count as activities?
Third -- what type "information" is the Additional Info section for, exactly?

I'm the first kid applying to college in my family and my parents are kind of clueless where the application process is concerned so I'm pretty much tackling this on my own. Any help is highly appreciated.

You don’t document pre-high school honors there, you can include an activity resume if you like and put it there but chances are unless you won the noble prize or similar, colleges won’t care.

Can you be more specific what this outside activity is that isn’t part of an organization and that will help us tell you how to list it

the “additional info” is just that, something outside of honors or positions held that explains your involvement. We used it so differentiate between marching band and jazz band when selecting the category “musical-instrumental”, for example.

The things I do outside of school are play guitar, violin, run a lot (mile is around a 5:10), and write/paint a lot (two passions of mine and I run a writing blog).

In general, you shouldn’t put things prior to high school on your resume. It’s frowned upon.

The additional info section can have a variety of uses. If you have some sort of situation that isn’t apparent in the app or something similar. I explained a sudden disappearance of athletics because of an injury.

Thanks for the replies!
Would anyone be able to tell me if the aforementioned activities can go in the activities section and how to document them?

sorry but I also have another question. I’m asuming National Art Honor Society goes under the “Art” category, but is National English Honor Society considered “Academic”?

They could both be listed under honors and awards. Just click “School” as the level of recognition. Typically, NHS is listed under honors and awards, so I would assume NAHS and NEHS would be the same.

thank you! do you by chance have any idea about out-of-school, personal activities with regards to documentation? sorry to be a bother.

suppeeps -

You are not a bother at all! These posts will hopefully help other people, too.

You do not need documentation about out-of-school activities. Just list them and be honest. For the most part, if they are substantial, your guidance counselor or some teacher will probably reference some of them.

But even if they don’t, do not worry. The adcoms do not have time to cross-reference all of your ECs, so as long as you honor the honor system, you will be fine.
