Hi! I have two questions regarding the common application:

1) If I have won an academic award for an extra-curricular activity, e.g. a business competition like DECA, should that information be entered in the Academics -> Honors section or in Activities -> Extracurricular -> "Honors won" field?

Also,

2) Since I am an international student, my teachers did not want to submit their recommendations online (they didn't feel comfortable using that method). Instead, I have sent my universities a hard copy of the letter. However, my counselor decided to try out the online forms and submitted her portion that way. Should I notify the universities somehow? By "additional information" on the common app or through email/phone?

Thanks!

You don’t need to notify the colleges. All you had to do was put down the teachers’ recs as offline providers. For the counselor rec, you simply had to email her an invitation. Then, colleges know that you’re submitting both but you’re submitting teacher recs by mail and counselor rec online.

xm1chelle’s answer to #2 is spot-on. Regarding #1, I would list the award under “honors won” for that EC activity (the second option you indicated). Good luck!

Thank you both for your help!

The only reason I wanted to list those in the academic awards section is because then there’d be a distinction between state and international level competitions, and also because there’s not much room in the EC chart. I probably shouldn’t list it under both, right?

Oooh, good point. You wouldn’t want to list the awards under both, but you could do something like this: List your wins under Academic Awards, with the state and international scopes checked as appropriate. Then list DECA in ECs, indicating the hours you dedicated to it. I don’t think I’d leave it off of your EC chart, unless your other ECs are so amazing that an international competition doesn’t measure up to seven or eight others. You’re supposed to list the ECs in order of importance to you, but an accomplishment like that merits mention even if you didn’t love doing it. If you want to give an exhaustive list of ECs, upload a resume in Additional Information. Does this help?

Yes, it does! Thank you so much.
