I found the postcard we got last year after the Honors app was submitted. Its dated Nov 23.It lists the following timeline:
Dec 19 2005 Honors College notification begins, continues to Feb 2006
Jan 31 2006 McNair scholars Finalists notified of their selection (invitation to the interview weekend included)
Feb 20,2006 Other general University scholarships awarded

Hope this helps with this years crop of notifications

Ed Black just told me my son will get a regular acceptance letter anytime now, but the HC notifications don't go out until February. So, maybe they have changed their timetable. That's a long time to wait.

My daughter applied to USC last year. She completed her application in October, and was accepted in November (week before Thanksgiving). She completed the Honors College Ap by December 1. She received her notification of a McKissick Scholarship AND her denial of Honors College on the same day in February.

that Feb date seems late.Maybe he was giving you the last date they would notify? It also seems late b/c they do the Carolina/McNair notifications and interview weekends after they notify about HC acceptance and those weekends are held in early Feb and planned beforehand.

That application is really tough, but I did finally submit it... I guess it's a good way to make sure only the people who really want to apply actually do.

Now we wait until February... that does seem like a long time to wait. But I guess it's not that bad- Rice's Interim Decision has a December 1 deadline and a February 1 notification date.

Mary
Congrats on finishing the app and submitting it.Best of luck to you with all your college admissions.Maybe next year you'll be walking around in a Gamecocks T shirt!!

If you wind up going to visit when classes are in session and your S wants to meet someone in the Honors College,PM me and I'll set him up to meet my S,he's now also giving tours of Maxcy, the HC residence hall.

What is the time frame if you apply to the college, and also to the Honors College? I.e, daughter applied middle of October to USC. IN the middle of the application, it popped up that she should apply to the Honors College, so she did the ENTIRE application, i.e, regular and Honors.

I doubt she will make it into the Honors college, but we have not heard back from the regular college. Do they accept/reject you first, (and let you know) then (if you are accepted) do they pass along your app to the honors college admissions?

Just going crazy because she hasn't heard yet either way.

If I recollect, the regular admit came first, followed fairly quickly by the Honors admit.Scholarship letters came later.Just so y'all know, Friday was the last day of classes, and next week is finals. I dont know if that impacts the admissions offices schedule at all.
Be a little patient,it'll all come together in the next few weeks!

It's too bad the regular scholarships are awarded so late after the admissions decisions. My S will definitely go to USC if he gets a Cooper award, but he has to go throught applying to W&M, UVA and VT just in case he doesn't get the Cooper. We can't afford OOS tuition.

Hopefully the Cooper will be pretty much automatic for my S. He already is wearing USC shirts to high school, he really wants to go there.

I believe that any grant of more than $500 also comes with in-state tuition remission. A McKissick for example is worth $2000 annually in addition to in-state tuition which this year is valued in excess of another $12,000. Even without additonal grants USC becomes quite reasonable with the combined monies. My D did not make the HC but was named a Capstone Scholar and AFTER she accepted was given a sizable departmental scholarship as well.

I've been told that many departments wait to get a committment before offering the additional departmental money wanting to be sure that it is going to students who really want to be there rather than using it as a hook to get them to want to go there.

eadad
you are correct.any scholarship lowers the recipient to in state tuition rates..honors,capstone or not.namtrag..were you aware of this?
S has also found that many friends have departmental awards that were awarded AFTER they notified USC of the intent to enroll.

yes I was aware, but still, we can't assume that he will get any awards, and won't know for sure until March 1 or so whether he gets anything (assuming he doesn't get McNair). I was told he was pretty strong for Cooper since his SATs are above 1400, and he is number 6 in a class of 500. I think the brochure I was reading said 1350 SAT for Cooper.

I am pretty confident in saying he will be at USC next fall, but not confident enought to not apply anywhere else.

namtrag
S's original award last year was a Cooper with a 1450 SAT.Then he was bumped up to McNair status when someone dropped out of the original 40(he was #41 on their list). Our HS doesnt rank. Is your S a NMF?
By the way I found S's original USC file of acceptance letters..heres the timeline
USC acceptance letter:Nov 30,2005
Jan 11,2006 Honors College acceptance letter
sorry,I cant find the original letter awarding him the Cooper, and can't remember if it came along with the HC acceptance, but I know we knew about it before he got the last minute call for the McNair weekend which was in mid February,so hopefully you will know something by mid Feb,not March.
His notification about which level of McNair he was awarded was dated March 9 (but if you are called for the interview you get at least the Finalist amount)
His departmental award letters are dated April 18 and May 1.

Just wanted to add our experience, so far--

S's high school mailed his application on Nov. 27 or thereabouts, so it just squeaked in under the Dec. 1 deadline. Acceptance packet arrived on Fri., Dec. 22 and the letter offering admission to the Honors College came the very next day. We sent in the $200 tuition deposit at the end of Dec., thinking that perhaps this would facilitate further communications from SC...

I have to admit, even though I have checked out the honors/scholarship information on the SC website, I am not entirely clear about all of the scholarship opportunities, nor their implications. The in-state tuition is a major plus, of course. It seems as though Maxcy is the first choice for honors college housing (is it?), but what then should S put as his other choices?

My D is a freshman in the honors college. She lives in Capstone, which is also a housing choice for honors college students (it is a high-rise and has the revolving restaurant on top). A couple of floors are designated for honors college students, while the rest of the floors are filled with Capstone scholars. She has really enjoyed living there so far.
