Honors Algebra (Math 110AH)

Could anyone tell me about this course? Does the "honors" imply that it's going to be super difficult? When I hear algebra, I'd think of middle school though I assume it's going to be nothing like that..

Also, I noticed that regular algebra (Math 110A) has an enforced requisite of Math 115 (Linear Algebra). I haven’t taken that. However, the honors version I’m taking has no such requisite. Is this a mistake? Do I actually need Math 115 or no?

I hear it’s nothing like ordinary algebra, proof-based and all.

I presume you should take 115A beforehand

… have you taken any Linear Algebra? 110AH covers groups, 110A covers rings and fields. Try this site to see what that is: [Elements of Abstract and Linear Algebra by Edwin H. Connell](Elements of Abstract and Linear Algebra by Edwin H. Connell)

As for difficulty, when I took 115AH it was more in-depth than 115A but the curve might have been gentler. It’s hard to say since you can’t actually take both classes.

Also, none of the honors classes have enforced prereq’s, so I would guess you just use the regular requisites.

so math 115 is a must despite it not being in the “enforced requisites”? Dang. I’m really just looking for some back up classes to take since two of my courses are waitlisted…

Merkurjev is teaching it in the fall and he’s super-awesomely amazing, so I would completely recommend taking it with him if you have the pre-recs and can take the class. He’s not easy, but if you like clear concise lectures with a no-nonsense attitude, he’s your man. Plus open notes, open book tests are nice most of the time.

Well, there aren’t any prereqs listed, though I guess Math 115 is an implied prereq and I have not taken that. I’m going to call the math department today to find out for sure.

115 is a pre-req for 110AH, it’s simply not listed. You should only take the honors versions if you want to go to grad school for math and are VERY comfortable with proofs. Have you taken a proof-intensive course before? If not, take 115AH first and leave 110 for next year. There’s no need to rush

^I saw the schedule you posted on the transfers forum. Are you in the Scholars Program?

No. However, I was going to start the Econ Scholars program in the fall, but changed my mind after taking a graduate seminar course in the spring (realized I was doing Econ for all the wrong reasons). I don’t think I’ll take the Basic to try for the math scholar’s program either. I don’t have the $$$ to pay for another year anyhow.

So how does the process work for getting into grad classes? I was considering the math scholars program but it seems like too much work in too little time to be worthwhile.

There really isn’t much of a process. You just sit in and ask the professor’s permission to take the class. The only time where it may not be up to the professor is when the class is already way to full.

Interesting, thanks. How does that work in terms of having 12 units at the start of the quarter. Have you enrolled in other classes as backups?

Well you don’t have to have 12 units until the end of second week.

But yea, I would just enroll in others as backup
