Honors/AP over General/"College Prep"

Hi! So at my school 4 levels of classes are offered, AP, Honors, College Prep, and General (from most challenging to least). Being a sophomore, my honors schedule is starting to become difficult. My question then is, would a college rather see you get a B in an honors class then an A in a college prep or general class? I have never gotten a B on a report card but i think 10th grade might be the year. Thanks!

Of course the answer most top colleges will give is that to get into their college, one must take Honors classes and get A’s  It depends what type of college you’re applying to. The most selective (top LACs and top national universities) will expect you to have 5 Honors/AP’s each year. Selective colleges that care about rigor will want to see as many Honors/Ap as possible but will be okay with some college prep level. Local public colleges don’t care very much about rigor.
Overall, if you plan to apply to selective/private colleges, one B in an honors class is better than another A, but in a college prep class.
