Honors Application Closes Dec. 1

Howdy!

We encourage all students applying to enter as freshmen/first-year for Fall 2015 to consider applying to the University Honors Program. Information about the University Honors Program, as well as the various college and departmental Honors programs, can be found at http://honorsprograms.tamu.edu.

Applications for the University Honors Program are evaluated on the basis of the student’s record of academic achievement and demonstrated potential for creativity, intellectual ability, imagination, curiosity, willingness to try new things and self-awareness. (from http://hur.tamu.edu/Honors/Apply-to-Honors). We are most interested in students who are seeking additional challenge and enrichment, and demonstrate that through a commitment to our program.

To see the syllabus for our Honors learning community course and get a sense of what you're committing to, see https://howdy.tamu.edu/Inside/HR2504/PDFs/SYL_201431_21418.pdf?08:38:19 and http://hur.tamu.edu/Honors/About-the-University-Honors-Program/Program-Requirements.

New for this year: we have created a single application portal for all Honors opportunities on campus. If you checked interest in Honors on the Apply Texas application, you should receive an email directing you to this page: https://honorsprogramsportal.tamu.edu. Please check out your options; some programs require additional application and others do not.

The University Honors Program requires freshmen/first-year students accepted to the program to live in the Honors Housing Community (McFadden|Lechner Honors Freshmen Halls). To have your application considered, you must have also applied for on-campus housing.

You will need to apply for on-campus housing as soon as possible after you have been offered admissions to get one of those spaces. All housing assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis, established by the date your housing application is received. Under this new system, you have 30 days from your acceptance to receive this priority placement. You have until May 1, 2015 to cancel housing and request a refund of your housing deposit if you decide later not to live on campus at Texas A&M. To read more about this new system, please visit: http://reslife.tamu.edu/freshmenPriority.

The deadline to apply to the University Honors Program is December 1, 2014. We will make all notifications by March 31, 2015.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,

P.S. If you haven't seen it, there is a an excellent discussion about the freshman experience in Honors (including some student perspectives) at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/texas-m-university/1654155-university-honors-how-competitive.html#latest.

Jon, just letting you know. My son never got one of those emails even though I thought he checked honors on Apply Texas. I went to the link you provided and it said he did not select any honors options. However, when we reviewed his Apply Texas application, honors had a green “yes”. No problem since the honors application still let him apply but you might want to be aware that there’s a disconnect somewhere.

Thanks for the heads-up gobluemom85! Could you contact me directly so I can get more information to follow up with our IT folks? jkotinek@tamu.edu.

I am a future Aggie and also did not get any honors information even though I selected the option to receive it. However, I was not as fortunate as gobluemom85 's son and found out about the honors application after the deadline. Is there any way for me to still be a part of the program? If I can’t be in the program, am I allowed to live in the honors dorms since I am eligible to be in honors?
