Honors at Choate

Thanks Dan. :) Were you in Honors Geometry? Did you get to request teachers before the beginning of the year?

hey dan, i have a question
: )
does anyone (or is it possible) to take algebra II and THEN Geometry???
cause my math teacher (good friend) says ill get more out of physics...
just wondering...
cc

Olivia,
I was in Regular Geometry, and I thank the lucky stars for that. And no, I didn't get to request teachers before the beginning of the year. But once you get here, go become good friends with Ms. Saint James, the Registrar, and she can set you up.

Pumpkin,
Geometry is a prerequisite for all students entering Algebra II. So, sorry, but that is not an option. Regular physics really doesn't focus much on the mathematical side of the equation (pun intended), though Honors physics does. Either way, the teachers explain the concepts so that it doesn't really matter which math course you are taking.

Is Honors Geometry really hard? I'm more left-sided than right-sided. (what's the creative one?). I guess I can just drop down if it's too hard.

In case any of you have specific questions regarding courses, here's a list of all of the ones I've taken and when I took them:

Interestingly, over my whole time at Choate, I received the best grades in the terms with the most difficult course load.

To put my course selection in a college admissions perspective, I was accepted Early Decision to Kenyon College and will be attending this fall.

Olivia, I honestly don't know how hard it is since I didn't take it...

Here's what my friend said:
"it wasn't THAT bad but its more like an English class theres so much like... 'stuff' you have to remember that's just a bunch of nonsense... like, proofs and stuff, you never have to know that and its all just remembering exactly what to write"

Yesss, I'm good at memorizing !! :D

I have a question about your freshman fall courses. I'll PM you.

At my son's public school, he took honors algebra I, honors algebra II, then honors geometry (in that order). Honors Algebra I and Geometry were very easy for him; Algebra II gave him some trouble, so as he will be starting bs as a ninth grader, he is taking it again and will move on to pre-calc as a sophomore, I guess.

my new schedule:

Fall Term

Intro to Literature (EN100)

Winter Term

Intro to Literature (EN100)

Spring Term

Intro to Literature (EN100)

Does this schedule look good?

Kely, your son is going to Chote too? We need to add him to the list!!

i believe kelyme's son is going to NMH

Helen,
That schedule looks fairly balanced, though it does include a lot of difficult classes. I assume you are a native speaker of Chinese given this placement, so that shouldn't be too much of a challenge, but carrying Geometry Honors and Physics Honors at the same time may be hard. That's ok though, since you can always drop down (as I did after less than a week in Honors Physics). You also do a very good job of fulfilling your requirements throughout the year. I'd say you're looking pretty good!

Thanks tugttw. Math is my best subject so I'm pretty sure I'm going to Honors. And science...I am doing very well this year so I'm gonna go for honors. If its too hard im gonna drop down.

my schedule is...

geometry honors
physics honors
latin 3 honors
english 1 honors
arabic honors (if they let me, if not, chinese 1 or something else...maybe that 10th grade history class...)
6th course: contemporary issues, the drawing class, public speaking (if they let me take 6 courses the whole year)

but to be honest im not totally sure about it yet...
: )
cc

Carson, they don't have honors for English 1... it only starts in Junior Year I think....

oooh
oops!
haha
i must have misread
(btw it's cason--thats not a typo)
everyone messes it up
: )
cc

Oh, sorry... I knew it was Cason or Carson and I took a wild guess.

I've said it right before!! :)

haha
yeah, you did...

I have questions on Math and Latin. Math is a stronger subject of mine even though I still like English, but I am in Geometry right now and I'd regularly be going into Algebra 2 honors next year so preferably I'd like to take Algebra 2 next year but I'm not sure whether or not I should try for honors or not. And as a follow up to that, if I like math and am good at it then should I try for honors Physics? Lastly, with regards to Latin I am currently using Ecce Romani 2 as a textbook and am going to finish that by the end of the year, so I'm wondering which Latin course I should take. I know my sister went to a different school and switched from Ecce Romani to Wheeloch's (sp?) Latin. She went into a Latin 2 class but I'm not sure what textbook Choate uses.

go for the honors. u can drop down if its too hard.
