Just got letter inviting DD to apply for Honors. More essays!

MichiganGeorgia - you’re here too! My son also go his invite to apply to the Honors College in the mail today - he’s not auto-admit (which he knew) but the between application essays and IB essays fall of senior year, I don’t think he has the ummmmmph to write anything but his name and only that if its for an acceptance somewhere.

Threeofthree. My DS is the same way. He really doesn’t like writing essays. He has some due tomorrow for at 11:59 pm and I know we will end up submitting them sometime after 11 pm. I’m sure he wishes that we had a ton of money and he could just have applied at one or two schools instead of many schools to find the best combination of cost and education.
If they hadn’t started messing with the hope scholarship we probably wouldn’t have looked at out of state schools but I am concerned they are going to make more changes.
Are you looking at any other colleges?

GT and NCSU were his EA reaches (although within reach) but he didn’t want to stretch too far under EA, the balance of the schools were matches/safeties but we very much liked them all and I have to say I fell in love with Alabama…still my favorite.

We are considering alabama also. I like that the honors dorms everyone has their own bedroom. My only concern is if his grades go down and he loses his scholarship we would have to pay out of state tuition:(

Hey guys, I’m currently a third year honors student at UGA! I just wanted to spread the word about getting involved at UGA. I know a lot of you will figure this out on your own, but consider this a head start!

ACCEPTED BULLDOGS! PLEASE join ‘Groups at UGA’ on Facebook. If you have your UGA ID you can register on Facebook. Universities have groups system where students can network and set up personalized groups based on interests. TONS of student organizations and misc groups have “groups” on Facebook you can join.

If any of you are pre-med, look into UGA Miracle and AMSA. They’re the two biggest pre-health student organizations at Georgia and two of the biggest in the south! Within ‘Groups at UGA’ you’ll find people reselling and buying textbooks, people carpooling, people selling stuff, people looking for apartments and roommates, people advertising student organizations and clubs, people looking for jobs, people selling football tickets etc.

It’s a GREAT resource to get to know how things are done at UGA before stepping foot on campus as a freshman.

Everyone should take a look at KingoftheSEC’s post regarding the honors program. It’s very detailed and insightful.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-georgia/1430802-anyone-considering-uga.html

Hello all! Hope everyone’s enjoying the holidays.

I just had a quick question for anyone currently in UGA Honors regarding the Honors Internships. I was looking up the Honors Program, and I was enticed by the Honors Internships in Washington DC, NY, etc., particularly the summer internship in NY with the Greater NY Hospital Association, which I really want to participate in if I go to UGA. My question is, how competitive is it to actually get an internship? Is it very competitive and hard to land one for an Honors student, with a large number of Honors kids applying and few getting them, or is it rather a sort of formality, with most everyone who applies getting an internship?

Hello. This is our first post so sorry if we are not doing this correctly. Does anyone know if you are not “auto-admitted” to UGA Honors, does it definitely mean you are out of the running for Foundation Fellows? Student received letter “inviting” application to Honors about a week ago.

I would think it very unlikely you would be invited to the Fellows interviews. Only 50 or so are selected. These students tend to be the top academically and are heavily recruited by UGA and other top schools… Unless, you have something else outstanding on your application-published work, amazing EC etc

Fellows tend to have the stats for Ivy league type schools and many turn down these schools for the Fellowship ( and vice versa)

Thanks for your reply - we appreciate your input. We more or less figured that was the case. The student in question does have very high stats and had been invited to apply for the FF - but we always knew it would be a long-shot. We had hoped for the auto-admit, but must have just missed. We are very grateful for the EA admission and generous scholarship already offered. Looks like time to get working on the Honors application! Congratulations to everyone who was auto-admitted to Honors and best wishes to those awaiting FF/Ramsey.

Marmee- I hope I am wrong. Have a look at these stats and compare if your studentfalls into the acceptance ranges

[Welcome to the University of Georgia Honors Program](First Year Experience - UGA Morehead Honors College)

Congrats on the scholarship and good luck with the Honors application process. I know it is difficult for students to keep submitting these apps, but a positive out come will be worth it.

Hi Gibson - thanks for the link. My student has test scores higher than the averages listed for FF, Ramsey and Honors. We figure the recalculated UGA GPA is the issue. School student attends is small and doesn’t offer many APs and most cannot be taken before senior year. So although student took all honors and the 1 AP possible before senior year, the applicants auto-admitted likely had more APs, and therefore, higher recalculated GPAs. Student is taking the maximum number of APs possible in senior year and was accepted into several other Honors Colleges/Programs at the other EA schools applied to. Really liked UGA, though, so is working on Honors application and is hoping that mid-year grades will be factored in and will get a favorable decision. We agree, it is definitely worth the work involved. Thanks for the encouragement and Happy New Year to you and yours!

Those AP classes really do it for admissions. They’ve noticed that there is a lot of grade inflation at high schools these days. The more AP courses the better. Last year’s class averaged 5 AP courses. Still, there is always a chance. If the GPA and SAT scores are golden, along with some decent extracurricular activated then you’ll be fine. Good luck!

I didn’t get auto-admitted, I think mostly because my SAT was low at the time. What do you think my chances are with these stats?

GPA:
3.9 unweighted
4.45 high school weighted
4.09 UGA weighted (4.175 end of year UGA weighted)

SAT:
CR: 740
M: 690
W: 790
2220 total

12 honors
9 AP
