Honors Carolina EA+RD Thread!

Heyy so I wanted to make this thread for future reference so students in the coming years will have a general idea as to what Honors Carolina is looking for, considering they only accept 300 students/year! So if you've been accepted into Honors Carolina, please post your stats in the following format, which can be found in the EA acceptance thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-north-carolina-chapel-hill/1075010-official-unc-class-2015-ea-results-thread.html

I'll start it off:

In state

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2160 (M: 720, CR: 680, W: 760, Essay: 12)
[] ACT: 33
[] SAT II: MathII: 760, Biology E: 680
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 8/450
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APES (4) Psychology (5) English (4) Biology (4) Calculus AB/BC (3/3)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics B, AP European History, AP U.S. History, AP Statistics, AP English, AP Human Geography, Honors Debate IV
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Bunch of HOSA/Debate awards

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): HOSA (President), Debate (Captain), Spanish Club (VP), 2 medical internships, residence schools over the summer, etc
[] Essays: Good I think
[] Teacher Recommendation: Amazing
[] Counselor Rec: Equally amazing

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): North Carolina
[] Country (if international applicant): U.S.A.
[] School Type: Relatively large public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: >100,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Rigor, Extra-Curriculars, Rank, Essays/Recs
[] Weaknesses: GPA, Test Scores

[/ul]General Comments: I was pretty surprised upon getting the invite because my scores aren't all that phenomenal, but when I heard that it was pretty heavily based on ECs/Essays/Recs, I was slightly less surprised lol. We have 4 kids from my school who got in!

Just wanted to make a comment…I’m pretty sure they accept a lot more than just 300, but around that number enroll. The students who are accepted in the honors program are probably more likely to decline the invitation and attend another school. Overall of the people I know who got invited, UNC is not their top choice.

Decision: Accepted

In state or out of state? In state

Objective:[ul]

[] Essays: I thought they were pretty good.
[] Teacher Recommendation: It made my mom cry.

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM I guess.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades and scores, teacher rec, maybe essays.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of leadership in extracurriculars, lack of service extracurriculars.

[/ul]General Comments: I’m not too surprised but I am glad, I heard it was mostly based on grades, so I was hoping I made it. At least 4 or 5 got honors from my school.

Reflection
Strengths: test scores, GPA, AP scores
Weaknesses: Out of state, maybe lack of ECs outside of sports

General Comments: So Honors is great and everything, but a scholarship/good financial aid is what I’m going to need to be able to attend UNC.

UVA Hopeful – have you heard from UVA yet?

“General Comments: So Honors is great and everything, but a scholarship/good financial aid is what I’m going to need to be able to attend UNC.”

Exactly. In the immortal words of Carol Channing: “A kiss on the hand may be quite Continental, but diamonds [or, in this case, scholarships] are a girl’s [or, in DS’s case, boy’s] best friend.”

Say it with dollars, UNC! Otherwise, DS is heading for that full ride at Bama. :)

I don’t hear back from UVA until April 1st. UVA’s where I’ll probably end up (assuming I get in) because it’s my best option in-state. I just wish I had at least the option to go OOS because I’d really consider Carolina.

I got into honors, but I’m a first year, so I guess it doesn’t really count. See you all in Cobb!

IMO- FA here at Carolina is AMAZING and very competitive with other schools, so I hope that it works out for everyone.

^Eh, they’ve been pretty bad about FA for my bf.

In state or out of state? In-state.

[] ACT: N/A.
[] SAT II: N/A
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
[] Rank: At time of applying, 49 out of 591 (tied with 12 for the spot). But my school is… known to be competitive.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Psych (5), AP US History (5), AP English Language (4)

[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, AP French, AP Comparative Gov, AP US Gov, Honors Sociology, Honors Lessons of Vietnam/Modern International Relations

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NC
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Public.
[] Ethnicity: White.
[] Gender: Female.
[] Income Bracket: 100,000+.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college student.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays, my recommendation.
[] Weaknesses: Service ECs, probably.

[/ul]General Comments: I got invited to Scholarship Day, too, if it’s of any interest.

On a side note, if you’re a future applicant, make sure your essays highlight your personality. When I spoke with the Admissions counselors, they really stressed that, and I think it’s what made the difference in my application; I know people with higher stats than mine who didn’t get invited.
