Honors Chances

I’m applying to OSU and was hoping to make honors but I’m not sure whether they’ll invite me. Any ideas?

GPA: 3.86 W with a class rank of top 25% not top 10% like they say on their website
ACT: 32
SAT: 2080
APs: 5 on both Euro and US history, 4 on Lang

My EC’s are very good and I am very well rounded but I don’t know if they consider those for honors invites. I can provide those if they do consider those though.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Is Ohio State familiar with your high school? If they are aware that it is highly competitive, I think they will take that into consideration.

I go to Alter which is a very good HS so they are familiar with us. Are their requirements not really requirements but more like guidelines?

They are requirements, but I would also think that a slightly lower class rank in the context of a highly competitive high school, strong gpa and 32 ACT would allow some leeway. Best thing to do is simply ask Ohio State. I’m sure that they’ll be very honest as to how–and how firmly–they interpret those requirements.

Also, you can earn your way into Honors & Scholars with your freshman year performance.

I’ve tried asking them but I always end up talking to some student who doesn’t know the answer so they just defer me back to the website. Also, if I weren’t to make honors, would you recomend scholars or wait and apply for honors after freshman year?

“Only new first quarter freshmen who begin at OSU during the autumn quarter are eligible to apply for the Scholars Programs.”

i thought only freshman were eligible to apply to the scholars program?

[Scholars: International Affairs](http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/scholars/IA.aspx) click how to apply

Yeah, that is saying it is only freshmen. You can apply for your first quarter freshman year if you begin in the fall. So you apply as a senior to be in the program as a freshman

From what I was told when I visited, a 30+ACT is usually what’s needed to get an almost guaranteed invite for honors. So I would say you should be good. Your lower than top 10% class rank shouldn’t be much of a problem considering that it’s still relatively high and your high school is competitive.

you will NEVER get someone at OSU to guarantee you honors admission…student or otherwise. You will just have to wait until a few weeks after your acceptance. My dd’s school did not rank but I’m sure they knew where she stood with numerous students attending from her highschool each year. No way top 10%, prob not 25% either but same GPA and ACT score and she is honors, doing well (deans list 2/3 quarters and only 1 B in other). She also was invited to to Maximus, which is top 3% and she won one of the scholarships.

Thats very impressive. They send all the information as to what you’re eligable for when they send you your admission decision correct?

Acceptance letter first…then honors invitation a few weeks later (both before Christmas). Maximus invite was after that, I believe sometime after the first of the year. Dates for Maximus were late Feb, early March? and she had the scholarship offer mid-March.

If you have 30+ ACT, you will be in the honors program. If you have 32+ you will be invited for Maximus Competition and automatically get their Maximus scholarship (around 2700 a year) or more based on the competition.

I’d get a Maximus scholarship? I had wrote that off already…you sure on that one?

You CAN get in without being in the top 10 percent.
I got in, and was only in the top 20.
However, at orientation I found I was the only person who was not in the top ten percent of their high school class, and they looked at me rather funny.
OSU has been funky about their admissions. I wouldn’t call it a sure bet, but it’s definitely possible.

That sounds good. My ec’s are pretty good so if it comes down to it that should move me up
