I am a freshman and I go to a fairly large school, and you have the option to choose your classes early so you get your highest preferences. So I will be picking my classes for next year, and I was thinking about taking Honors Chem online over the summer. Then, I would be able to take AP Chem sophomore year. Is this a good idea? I am not taking any AP's right now, and next year I will be concurrently enrolled in APWH. Furthermore, I am currently taking Algebra 2, and next year will be in Pre-Calc. So would this be good?

What necessitates you taking AP Chem next year? Would there be room in your schedule for Junior and Senior year?

There’s nothing wrong with it in itself. If you want to get a head start and wouldn’t prefer doing something else in the summer, then by all means take Honors Chem over the summer.

If you’re cool with it and it’s not too much pressure go for it

Ha I don’t think it’s a good idea. Chemistry is FREAKING HARD. First C I’ve ever gotten in my life (and I rarely even get B’s)

I’d be weary of taking AP Chem and APWH at the same time. I got an A this semester (I’m a History person), but the rest of my classmates find it really hard. I go to a really competive nationally ranked school though, so things might be different for you.

I think taking something like this would be great. D took an online required Econ class this summer. I think it took her about 2 weeks but she was spending a fair amount of time on it. One suggestion would be to look at what percentage of students get a 5 on the AP Chem exam. If only 5 percent or 10 percent of students get a 5 make sure you are ready for such a difficult class/test. What would be more typical would be AP US a History or AP Enviro sophomore year. Generally speaking though some kind of academics after freshman year is a super idea,

AP Chem is one of the toughest APs. Definitely not something I’d recommend, especially when taking APWH.

At my HS they have a similar program, where you take HC over the summer and then do AP Chem sophomore year. I would say it depends on what you want to major in college/what careers you’re looking into. I’m thinking about med school right now, and for that I have to take General Chemistry and Organic chem in college. Taking AP chem would have prepared me SO MUCH for general chem; I really regret not doing it. As for the work load, it actually all depends on the teacher and what type of learner you are. If you think you;re motivated enough to go for that A, then you should take it, esp. if you’re looking into a science major.

I would do that. I tried doing that myself but my school wouldn’t allow it
