Hello, I will be a junior next year and we have to make our schedules (I know I should be taking chemistry as a sophomore, but its a long story). Anyways, I’m not sure if I should take honors chemistry or just a regular chemistry class.
In a regular chemistry class, I will probably be getting a 95+ average (my friend is gonna give me all the tests, oops).
In a honors chemistry class, I feel like I will struggle and get like an 85 average and I do not like the teacher.
Do colleges really care if you’re in an honors or regular class? Will it affect your chances of getting accepted?
I will like to go to Colgate University.
Colgate University is considered a very selective liberal arts college. It will likely favor applicants who have taken full advantage of the Honors/AP courses that their high schools offer over those that have not.
My advice is to face the challenge and enroll in Honors Chemistry. If you feel as if you can attain an 85, I am sure that there’s no reason why you couldn’t attain a 90 through a combination of effort and improved time management and study skills. Academically, junior year is the most important year of your high school career and you need to do the best (both in terms of grades and course rigor) you possibly can.
However, this all depends on other factors such as the strength of the rest of your schedule, the course offerings of your school, your intended major, and whether or not Colgate is the highest school on your list in terms of selectivity.
I took Honors Chemistry as a sophomore last year, and I have never struggled so much in a class.
If I could do it again I would put myself in regular chemistry. In my school their is a large curriculum difference.
The only thing that strengthens my reasoning for doing poorly is that I did it as a sophmore, and have the opportunity to take physics as a junior, which is big plus in the eyes of colleges
Take Honors Chemistry! I’m in it right now, and even though my school’s Chemistry Department has the WORST teachers, I still have a stable A in that class.
(Although of course, I think math is easy and chemistry has a lot of math in it. If you like biology better and hate math, then regular chemistry may be better for you.)
