Honors classes & Dorms selections

Most likely will be heading to IU this FALL'07. Just wondering, what's the huttons honors classes for? What will one benefit from? Does it only mean more classes?

What are the dorms available for freshman? Anyone heading to IU this coming FALL'07 willing to help me out ..

Hey Kahlen, I'll be heading to IU this fall too. :)
From what I've heard, honors programs at colleges are there just to challenge kids. I've heard there is really no bearing on them, unlike honors classes in high school where they make a good impression. Just something useless to tag onto your resume though it wouldn't even make a difference. But I dunno, you might wanna get another perspective on that.

As for dorms, there should be a housing booklet in your acceptance letter. And you can fill out the housing form online. There are 3 neighborhoods that freshmen can live in, each neighborhood consisting of various housing...so you can rank your preferences and what not on the housing application and they will try to meet your preferences. I put the Central neighborhood as my first choice :)

Ok yeah I am going, I still ahve ot send in my check to the Bursar but that will get done soon. But yeah I am hoping for Central because I know NOrthwest is crazy. Honors College I will probably do it but I am not sure yet. I do love smaller classes though.

I haven't accepted my invitation to the Honors College yet.. I'm concerned about how difficult it would be. I've taken the hardest classes offered at my school, but my school is far, far from competitive. Does it vary a lot by which class you take? Anybody have any insight?

The coolest thing about IU is that you can check Grade Distribution charts to see just how much different honors courses are in terms of grading than regular courses.

I'll take a class that many of you will likely take - Finite Mathematics. There is the regular version, and the honors version. Here are links to their Grade Distribution Charts:

Regular (E201)
<a href="http://wwwreg.indiana.edu/Gradedistribution/GetDistAll.asp?searchtype=deptcrse&acad_term=Fall+2006-2007&acad_org=ECON&subject=ECON-E&catlg_nbr=201%5B/url%5D">http://wwwreg.indiana.edu/Gradedistribution/GetDistAll.asp?searchtype=deptcrse&acad_term=Fall+2006-2007&acad_org=ECON&subject=ECON-E&catlg_nbr=201</a>
Honors (S201)
<a href="http://wwwreg.indiana.edu/Gradedistribution/GetDistAll.asp?searchtype=deptcrse&acad_term=Fall+2006-2007&acad_org=ECON&subject=ECON-S&catlg_nbr=201%5B/url%5D">http://wwwreg.indiana.edu/Gradedistribution/GetDistAll.asp?searchtype=deptcrse&acad_term=Fall+2006-2007&acad_org=ECON&subject=ECON-S&catlg_nbr=201</a></p>

You can see that for Regular, the grades received by the kids are lower than their average GPA.

For honors, you still have a difference in GPA (Microeconmics is one of the hardest classes in the business school), but it's not as large, and the average GPA of the class is much higher.

I didn't get the auto invite for Honors, and I was close to applying, but didn't. It's the one thing I regret. My advice is to at least apply via petition to the Honors College because there is better advising, more oppurtunities, and you're in better classes with good professors.

Taking Honors courses at IU allowes you to graduate with Honors on your diploma. You also get smaller classes and better professors. I don't know about the better oppurtunities, because i'm not in the school, but I know that the B-School being a direct admit is great, because the honors courses are great, and there are lots of guest speakers and programs specifically for DAs. Advising is improved and much more available.

Do you think I can get a dorm in the Central neighborhood if I apply very early April?

Uh, okay.

So this thread can be for those admitting this FALL'07 ! =)

What other unis have you guys applied to and got accepted?

what's the difference between residential halls and apartments?

Residentail halls to my limited knowledge are basically the dorms, andthe apartments are those that the university offers to students. I would hazard a guess that freshman rarely get an apartment. OK I posted this a few days ago but what does anyone know about IU Beginnings? Is it worth it to go to school a few weeks early or is really for peopple who have never been around the area. If I am wrong in any of this I am sorry, please feel free to enlighten me or anyone else! :)

My son didn't do the Beginnings program, so I really don't know anything about it. I think it might be fun, but it certainly isn't essential.
