Honors Classes

I read somewhere that separate honors sections are available for freshmen courses...
what are honors classes like? Small? Difficult? What kinds of honors classes are available?

Honors classes are designed to be smaller, not more difficult (although this could vary by course).

There are some honors courses that are the same course as non-honors (I took Honors Priniciples of Macroeconomics). Then there are the First Year Inquiry Series, which satisfy core reqs and are specific courses that only honors freshman can take (I took Global Climate Change to satisfy my science req… they also have these for social science, arts/humanities, etc.).

GCC had 20ish students and Macro had 50ish I’d say. And I’m tempted to say that courses depend more on the prof than on whether or not they’re honors.

Are there honors section for freshmen courses like Calc 1/2 physics…etc?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure a whole lot of those freshman courses have honors sections. My roommate’s a civil engineer and it felt llike all of her classes last semester were honors.

i’m really having trouble deciding whether or not I should join…I’m not sure if I can maintain a 3.4 gpa

You’ve been accepted into the honors program and you can’t decide whether to accept it?

I definitely say go for it! The worst that can happen is that you don’t graduate with honors. You’ll get all the benefits (housing, cheaper Nutcracker and Symphony tix, smaller classes, etc., etc.) for the time that you’re still in the honors program. And you get a semester to bring it up if you fall below.

There really isn’t any reason to not accept honors, in my opinion. Let me know if you have any other questions at all!

I second that.^
It seems like a really great opportunity, and since the classes aren’t designed to be harder it shouldn’t be too much more stressful.

ahh as long as they aren’t harder…I was just worried about stressing out and going crazy over them but I think i’ll take it

One other thing, I don’t think I’ll be living on campus. I’ll most likely be commuting since I don’t think I can afford the extra room and board cost… so no LLC? LLC sounds interesting…is it possible for me to get into IV in the future?

Honors LLC in IV is only for freshman. If you want the Honors LLC after that, you have to go to WVF. However you can live in IV as an upperclassman, just not in that LLC.

There is seriously NO reason not to choose honors. There isn’t any stress; it’s not like in high school where having the letters AP in front of a class suddenly make it ten times harder. In fact, sometimes it’s even less stressful because the honors program makes a huge effort to put on events that are geared toward making people chill out. We had midnight breakfast twice this year- it was awesome.

And can’t keep a 3.4? Well they won’t kick you out for ages, so you get all the perks in the meantime. If you keep above a 3.0 they will keep you as on probation for a while. Seeing as 3.0 is required for many scholarships, that’s not too hard to expect from people.
