Honors College and NMF/NHRP scholars?

I saw something referencing that all National Merit Finalists are automatically placed into the honors college.

I was wondering if this was up to date (the reference was about four years old), and if this also referred to National Hispanic Recognition Program scholars - I know that those are looped in with NMFs when it comes to merit scholarships.

Thank you so much!

That was the case and it used to say it on the merit scholarships page - but it doesn’t say it anymore. Things have changed with NMF’s over the past four years - used to be full tuition, than $30,000 a year, and now up to $30,000 a year. Any NMFs out there not get honors for this year’s admission cycle?

Also, the honors and university scholars programs are being revamped this year for 2017 admission - been lots on this board about this - no solid information released by the school yet on what the changes will be.

Below is a link to an article in the Northeastern newspaper detailing the announcement of the end of the University Scholars program, and announcing the expansion of the honors program. Of course, no details are provided - just a lot of disappointment from students. Please post with any new information on the changes to the honors program.

Odd that they felt it necessary to tell entering Scholars that they would be the last class, at least in the present form, without being able to announce what the new program would be.

Sounds like the full tuition scholarship was not producing the yield the college was expecting.

Not sure about the yield - at least one year (incoming 2013 or 14 - I can’t remember which) - they had too many that attended and the program was larger than anticipated that year

I’m not sure – Dr. Iacono really emphasizes that the program has exceeded the school’s expectations. I’m not sure they ever intended to keep it open for very long

I want to add that people seem surprised by the lack of information for the class of 2017 applicants. The first year of the program - the 2012 applicants, had no prior information on the website etc. until after the offers to be part of the program were made (pretty sure about this since my daughter applied that year). So that year, students did not apply to NEU just because of the program, but had enough information about the program when they were accepted to make an informed decision.

@kiddie But it different when a new program is rolled out and the option is offered as an added enticement to accept, vs a standing program that has been well marketed by the school at college visits and is now off the table. They are ‘taking away’ a program vs just offering a new one. That’s what it sounded like originally, then they restated the information saying that although this is the last year of the Scholars program as we know it, there will be a new (details unknown) honors program.

Clearly they can do what they want, but it would make a lot more sense to roll it out earlier in the summer so there is not so much change at the last minute. Par for the course for Class of 2017.
