Honors college and Professorial assistantship

Are there any students or parents who have had experience with the MSU honors college and the professorial assistantship program? S is considering applying to MSU and would qualify for these programs.

Are they as awesome as they seem??

Nobody has any experience with these programs??

None here at apparently... but the people who check here regularly consist of only about 4 incoming freshmen who wouldn't have any clue what that is. So... in other words, this isn't the best place to ask.

i didn't get admitted to the honors college [4.1 weighted gpa/3.6 unweighted, 9 AP classes [passed them all, mostly 4's & 5's], 33 on my ACT, missed national merit semi-finalist by 3 points...etc], because i was in the top 5.5% of my class, and not the top 5%. however, had i been admitted, i would've been eligible for a PA. my friend is doing one and is really excited about it.

i'm still kind of bitter.

Wow, that kind of sucks. There are plenty of well qualified HC kids who go to competitive schools where top 5% is ridiculously good, but I guess MSU doesn't understand that. You should appeal or something.

i appealed. but because i got a C+ in my ap chemistry class first semester of senior year [one of three C's ever...the other two were in ap calculus BC, which i took in a junior...], they denied my appeal, telling me i could reapply after second semester only if i had all A's/B's. nevermind the fact that i was taking 4 ap classes senior year...or the fact that i had had a B in the class all semester, and after doing poorly on the final [which everyone in my class did terribly on, and the teacher told us was an old ap exam, covering topics we hadn't yet gone over in class...], i ended up with a 79.4, which was a C+, but just barely.

i didn't reapply, because they told me i wouldn't be able to do the PA or get the extra scholarship money if i was admitted to the honors college that late. i decided it wasn't worth my time.

the honors college, and especially the professorial assistantship is an awesome program. there was a forum a while back that went real deep into it. Let me see if i can find it.

or just look up "msu professorial" in the search bar in cc

I'm an incoming freshman in the honors college with a professorial assistantship. I don't have a lot of info about the program now as I have not yet started it, but it is one of the main reasons why I will be attending MSU. I'll be able to field questions in a little more than a month :)

From what I have heard, the honors college is definitely worth it. As honors college members, we can get around class restrictions. We get to register for classes early (after the 1st semester). There is honors housing if one so chooses. Regular General education requirements are a lot more lenient. etc etc.

I have no doubt that the honors college/professorial assistantship will be as cool as it seems... but that's just me! Oh, and that really stinks puppylover. Are you planning on being in the academic scholars program?

by the time i found out the results of my appeal for the honors college, academic scholars was full. i went on the waiting list, but wasn't admitted. so no.

I'm not in the Honors College because I only got a 28 on the ACT, I really should have taken it again. I have friends in the Honors College and they love it. I'll be applying after the fall semester.

you dont need to re-apply, you automatically get invited to the Honors College after your first semester if you have a 3.5 or higher

Fa la la:

Thanks so much for your reply. I would definitely be interested in hearing what you think about the program. S is interested for a number of reasons, many of which you already stated. We went to the presentation where they "rolled out the green carpet" and we thought it looked like a great program. Of course a lot of it depends on how much money he receives in the form of merit scholarships, and I hope that future employers and graduate schools recognize the program. He (I'm sure like you) have a lot of options when it comes to colleges).
