Honors College Applicant Pool

Well, this is my first time posting so I'm hoping I can get some answers from this. I applied to the honors college before the November deadline and thought I had a pretty good chance of getting in (1430 math/CR SAT, 32 ACT) but i still haven't heard back when I see that other students have. Does this mean they scored higher than me? I've been waiting on pins and needles over the whole holiday hoping to get a letter. If anyone who has been accepted already or knows someone who has would mind sharing their stats or have any other helpful information that would be great! Thanks

^^I don’t necessarily think it means they scored higher than you. Your scores are solidly in the honors ballpark (but midrange was 1380-1470 so lots of kids will have higher stats and maybe more of a slam dunk for letting you know early). But honors is pretty holistic - they also look at GPA, ECs and very heavily consider the essays. Honors acceptances will continue to roll out through February so it’s too early to start worrying. Have you heard back from USC at all?

Scmom12 - I got my general acceptance letter in early December, and earlier in the year I got a letter from them saying that my scores were good enough for “not only automatic acceptance into the nation’s #1 honors college, but also for substantial scholarships.” Which is why I was a little confused when I didn’t hear from honors in December. I heard from someone that they look at them as they come in and send out acceptances/denials that way and from someone else that they look at all the applications and them choose from the pool. Do you know which way is the actual process?

Also, i phrased that question a little poorly. In a less confusing way - do they view and make their decisions on applications in the order they get them, or all at once?

^^Honestly not sure. I guess you can have people turn in app way ahead of deadline, but my guess is they come in pretty much around the deadline.

Just remember that after first wave went out most offices have been closed (re-open Jan 2) so I expect there is a slight gap. Again, I do know the applications are read thoroughly and I really do think it’s too early to worry.

Based on my both my DD’s experience and other postings it seems the decisions for the Honors College are made both ways. The extremely qualified applicants are sent likely acceptance and/or scholarship letters right away as a recruitment tool. As applications continue to flow in, the ones that will probably make the cut are sorted out, but not acted upon until the deadline. This honors college limits enrollment so it would be important to get the correct yield of the highest qualified students based on the current year’s pool. Admittance to the university in general is decided more by just test scores/GPA/core high school classes. I am with scmom - just be patient; your scores/GPA are good. Remember the Honors College students are on par with those of highly selective liberal arts colleges; many of those applicants won’t hear back until March 1! Also, after break you can call the admissions office to ask about your specific situation.

Thanks to both of you! That was really helpful. I’m trying my best to not think about it much, but the wait is nerve-wracking no matter what. Even if I don’t get into honors, I’m still most likely going to go to SC (as long as I get in-state tuition), because I absolutely fell in love with the campus when I visited. I also want to go into international business, so that’s just a reaffirmation that I’m destined to be a gamecock

I got my acceptance letter for honors on December 23 along with a scholarship letter giving me instate tuition. My stats seem pretty similar to yours (1450/2220 SAT, 32 ACT) with decent ECs. I submitted my application the day before it was due so I don’t think they release their decisions based on when they get the application. I wouldn’t worry too much though because it said on the letter I got that the letters were released wayyyyy earlier than usual and more will still be coming out in February so don’t worry!! I am sure you will be fine!!

Sorry 33 ACT but again reallllllly close to yours

Rose11223 - wow, thanks for sharing! That makes me feel a ton better! And congratulations on being accepted!

Is there anybody else out there who hasn’t heard back about the honors college yet? I’m beginning to get a little worried.

^^According to our experience with prior years and what’s on honors and admissions website, some early decisions have gone out. The remainder of honors letters will go out mid-February…way too early to worry.

My S got acceptance to Honors and International Bs school w/ in-state tuition on 12/16. Believe he applied in early November. We are waiting to see what other scholarship he may get. Believe those letters go out soon

According to admission site final scholarship offers come out mid-March. Note that if you qualify for Leiber (nmf), for some reason that comes a little later.

Hey guys. I was wondering if you think I have a chance at honors? My gpa is 3.96 uw/4.6 w, SATs 1330 reading/math, 770 writing… 29 act (33 writing, 31 math, 29 reading, 27 science). Writing is my strong point, so I think my essays are pretty good. I am also involved in a bunch of meaningful EC’s, and a few international and state honors. I hope that this makes up for my less than stellar test scores… Let me know what you think, thx

In the past has there been any correlation between hearing from Honors College in December and being invited to the McNair Weekend?

I’m not sure the answer but curious of the same question. I commented on another thread that the date for that weekend is posted - March 1-3, 2014. My daughter got accepted in December but it’s possible they could send the invite for the interview weekend along with the Honors notifications that go out in February (I don’t know). I can’t imagine them not doing that considering the date is only about 2-3 weeks later.

I believe that if you hear from the Honors College in December, you are in the running for the McNair Weekend. However, they only invite 41 to the McNair Weekend and sent out many more acceptances in December.

Invitations to competition weekends for Carolina (in-state) and McNair are sent FedEx. D got her invite on a Saturday. Pretty sure these are sent out by Jan 31 (give or take a day).Honors college stuff should come regular mail as I remember it. With an end class of around 375 students, I agree that more acceptances are sent out in December than will end up invited to scholarship weekends.

Honors acceptances go out through mid February. IMO, the decisions about Carolina/McNair have been sent by that point since the Carolina weekend is the week before McNair so they would need to be coordinating with students by then.

Savannahstar,
Your stats are slightly below what is typically needed for admission to the SCHC, especially if you are out of state. The SAT needs to be closer to 1400 to have a chance. The weighted GPA of 4.6 is OK. The weight on the EC’s and essays has been overstated in this forum, but they are considered. However, without the 1400+ SAT, your are more likely a candidate to be a Capstone Scholar at USC. South Carolina is a great school. I wish you the best. Let us know when you hear more.
