I got an email saying that they are having information sessions (but you need an appointment and it's 1 on 1 o.O?) in the NYC area and I'm wondering if I would benefit by going. Would they see it as interest and give me better leverage for getting in, or is it a waste of time since I don't really have any questions? I think I'm just shy of being qualified of getting in so I'm a bit worried...

We were told that UB Admissions decisions weren’t made by the campus, which would mean that it wouldn’t help. On the other hand, one of my kids did show up at information sessions, met with a counselor to talk about the school, and made it clear that UB was a #choice. That kid was not in the range for honors, but just liked UB a lot. To our surprise, that kid was admitted early and even received a decent scholarship. I don’t have any way of knowing whether my kid’s contacts with the folks running the information sessions and the admissions office helped, but I’m sure that it didn’t hurt.

I’d give it a chance and go to the 1 on 1 interview. If you view it as additional interviewing experience, it’s not a waste of time. I bet you can come up with some questions if you think about it. Ask about your intended major or the resources available to help students choose majors. Ask about undergraduate research opportunities, whether there are clubs that match up to your current interests (their ski club is huge), how they come up with the choices of honors seminars, whether you’ll get full credit for AP or other classes you may have taken, etc. Ask about the best things about the school, and the things that UB wants to change. Ask when the new dorms will be completed, when the new engineering and pharmacy buildings will be open, and how the plans for the new medical campus are coming along. Research the school for 1/2 hour on-line, and you’ll come up with enough questions to make it clear that you really want to attend UB.

I got the email too, and responded. Haven’t gotten an answer back. Did you get accepted before you got the email? It just seems weird that I got this invite without hearing about their decision first. I applied rolling.

^

Nope, I haven’t gotten my decision yet and I am confused as well. I’ve had another college I applied to call me once on my cell and another time at my house simply asking me if I had any questions about the school to give them a call, and I didn’t get a decision yet.

Guess Universities like to toy with their applicants before breaking their hearts. =(

The honors college does reserve quite a few spots for students who might not qualify and are close to meeting their entrance requirements. If you can make your case as to why the honors college will benefit you then you have a chance. If your interesed, and can express that in an organized and logical manner, it will only help. Good luck!
