what are the requirements of getting into the honors college, and/or is it hard to be accepted into USC's honors college? I know it is highly ranked, but I am still curious. Any comments or help is appreciated!! Thanks!

Are you a junior? It’s too late to apply for honors this year. Look at Honors page for more information on honors college and profile of students.South Carolina Honors College - South Carolina Honors College | University of South Carolina;

Last year’s class midrange for ACT was 31-30, GPA 4.5-4.82, and SAT 1390-1465 (CR+M). Honors applications has a number of essays which are heavily considered. Good ECs also required. Deadline for honors is Nov 15.

If you are a junior, then plan to visit the honors college and work to bring up scores for next year.

@scmom12 yes I am a junior, and I will be taking the ACT at least two more times this year. Thank you!

We visited several honors programs last summer. South Carolina was one of the most impressive and immersive.

I will second the comment that the essays are very important. My daughter is a sophomore in the honors college and she has friends that had identical GPAs and test scores and one got into honors and one didn’t. They even went to the same high school so their academics were mostly identical.

If the national honors rankings didn’t change this year [to a slated ranking vs. numerical] I would argue that we would still be #1 in the country. The students in the Honors College I encounter daily are incredibly in every way. I was a stand-out in my high school to some regard and am constantly humbled by the students who excel in a multitude of fields at SCHC.

The application process is tough – 8 essays are a lot! Spend extreme time on them and market yourself; it will be worth the effort. They reward creativity, honesty, and eagerness. Don’t say what you think they want to hear. NOTE: These essays are almost entirely for the purpose of selecting “Top Scholars” – the McNair and Carolina Scholars, but are also important in the general application

Don’t shy away from the Honors College due to fear of rigor. I find my Honors classes to be on par in difficulty with my others. The difference is that my professors are consistently incredible, the class sizes are smaller (more attention), the topics are more interesting (took a course entirely on Blues history and learning to play harmonica), and the work is more focused on discussion than simple multiple choice exams for a large lecture hall.

In my case, I found that SCHC did a holistic review. I came out with a strong GPA, but very average in the eyes of the SCHC score requirements – I had a 1350 (2060) SAT and ended up with a McNair Scholarship, likely due to my recommendations and essays.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, @CockNotTrojan ! That was extremely helpful!

Your welcome, always glad to help! I posted that during a sleep-deprived finals week, and have a couple more thoughts now.

I’m assuming you are a junior? If you get invited to a Ruth’s Chris regional interest dinner, GO! They draw names from PSAT scores and will market the McNair Scholarship there. This is an incredible opportunity to develop a relationship with the regional recruiter. Through this, I was given permission to submit supplemental materials for SCHC (e.g. news article, resume, video of my music performance). I’m assuming you can submit supplemental materials anyhow, but it’s good to build that connection.

Another thought: if you end up doing the SCHC application, you may be overwhelmed by all of the varying questions. I think the best exercise is to make a list of the activities that make you who you are. Then sort them out to each of the questions, so that each essay shows you in a different light. For instance, I wanted to portray my passion for German, my involvement in the academic community, my musical history, and my track & field commitment. I found a place for each of those to go.

Good luck!

I just got accepted for next year. For what it is worth, here are my stats:

4.85 GPA (W)
3.9 GPA (UW)
33 ACT

I have taken 7 (max) classes per year (only 6 this year) and all core classes have been at Honors or AP level. All level three and above Fine Arts and Foreign Language were also at a Honors level (Currently in Spanish 5 and Art 4). Will have taken 5 AP classes by graduation (max is 6).

Member of NHS, National Spanish HS, National Art HS and Mu Theta Alpha. Vice President of NAHS. Also active in several clubs throughout HS, including being President of Impact club (faith based club) and VP last year. Member of Marching band for 3 years (no longer option at our school), two in Color Guard and one in Percussion. Varsity Cheerleader this year as well.

Outside of school, I have logged over 300 service hours, including 125 in the medical field.

Congrats senior15kay! When did you submit your honors application? I saw on your other post that you got your SC acceptance letter about a month ago, so you obviously beat the 11/15 Honors deadline by a good bit!

Yes on Honors College:

OOS (NC)
3.67 UW / 4.75 W
ACT: 34

Thanks! It was submitted late October.

Got about same scores as you guys and accepted too. Maybe see you guys there!

My daughter got her USC acceptance last week and her honors acceptance yesterday. She has a 3.95 UW/4.875 W. 1400/2100 SAT and 33 ACT. We are thrilled!

My D got her USC acceptance on Monday, Honors acceptance yesterday.
Stats: 31 ACT (but 33 if superscored, so maybe since they require all scores that helped?)
GPA UW: 3.94, W: 4.75 (approx.)
OOS: PA (suburban Philadelphia)
Strong ECs, recs, essays
Submitted arts supplement (viola)
Applied right before the deadline, maybe 11/13 or 11/14

Got my acceptance letter today. So excited! :)

I also got accepted to SCHC with lower stats than the average: 32 ACT, 4.1 GPA w, no idea unweighted. However, I think I had pretty good ECs and interesting essays. I’m also OOS (DMV area). Super glad that I now don’t have to apply into the international business program!

Acceptance letter to Honors College received today. OOS,34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, NMSF, lots of ECs.

Was accepted to USC on Monday, and received Honors College acceptance today.
Stats: 32 ACT
GPA: 4.52 W
OOS: MA
Only honors and AP classes taken, strong recs, ECs, and essays.
Applied on 11/13

I see that a lot of you have high weighted GPAs, but at my school the highest weighted GPA you can get based on our scale is around a 4.3-4.4. Do you think they will take this into account?
