***from what I’ve heard, it varies from college to college, but if I apply to the honors college, will I hear about my acceptance/rejection at the same time of regular decisions (April?)?

*also, as far as the honors programs go, could someone explain to me the differences between them and the requirements for each? k thanx :)

University of Alabama has three honors programs: University Honors Program (UHP), International Honors Program (IHP), and Computer-Based Honors Program (CBHP).

You're quite safe for UHP and IHP, if you can still apply this late (I'm assuming you're entering this year). As long as you have the necessary test scores, acceptance into those two honors programs are almost foregone conclusions (ACT 28 and GPA 3.3 for UHP), and I believe the stats are even less stringent for IHP (ACT 26). Even though you CAN transfer into UHP or IHP, the reason I still say "if you can still apply this late" is because I think if you don't START in the program, you have to transfer in after a semester with a 3.3 GPA at UA. In other words, if they still aren't accepting applications, I believe you'll have to transfer in second semester. By the way, if you can, I'd try to get into UHP THIS semester, because if you don't START in UHP, you can't stay in the fabulous honors dorms, so I'd call ASAP...

Benefits/perks: In addition to the nice dorms, People in UHP are the only ones allowed to take the honors classes, usually smaller and taught by better professors. Honors students also have their own dining hall. IHP requires you to take a foreign language class, a culture class, and travel abroad, but you can compete for scholarships to pay for the trip.

The third and most elite honors program is CBHP. It is a 4 year, 8-semester program (one class per semester) that involves learning computer programming languages and skills and then working as computer-oriented research assistants with a faculty member. It accepts approximately 40 students each year, all with exceptional stats (average ACT: 33), but they have accepted scores as "low" as 28. Sometimes those in the 28-30 range have a "hook" that distinguishes them from other applicants with higher test scores, such as computer programming experience--although they claim that ABSOLUTELY NO prior experience is necessary for acceptance into the program, since it starts from "square 1". USUALLY, the application deadline is in January and the 45 or so people who are accepted into the program are informed in March (they usually lose a few to other colleges), but for what I believe is the first time in CBHP history, they had fewer than 40 people accept their spots in the program this year. This means you MIGHT have a VERY slim chance of getting in. I highly doubt it, since they might have simply accepted people they initially rejected to fill the spots, but if you really want to be in it, you must act NOW. CBH does NOT allow transfers into the program.

If you have any other questions, they might be answered here:

<a href="http://honors.ua.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://honors.ua.edu/</a></p>

If not, just ask me. :)

Oh whoops. Your question "From what I've heard... at the same time of regular decisions (April?)" indicates to me that you AREN'T starting this year, in which case, ignore my prompts for you to act quickly. Just make sure you heed deadlines, and you'll be set for UHP and IHP, and you might have a shot at CBHP, too.

In answer to that question, I believe they send acceptance letters rather early for UHP and IHP students (January or February-ish, if my memory isn't failing me), but I know that they are not at all strict about application deadlines for UHP (they were still accepting people in June). The CBHP acceptance process is a bit more complex. First they have an application deadline in January, then they pick about 50-60 or so people to attend a CBH orientation in February. Finally they whittle the number down to 45 or so in March.
