Honors college chance ? :)

I am a going to be a high school senior at a specialized high school in NYC. I'm wondering if I would be able to get into the honors program at UB.

I have a 2070/2400 and a 1380/1600 cr&m I have a 97.6 weighted gpa ,

I have participated in jv basketball and several school extra curriculars. So, what are my chances?
Thanks :)

I think you have a strong chance at getting an Honors College offer, though, that should not be what you base your decision on (in my opinion). You may also get some merit $. good luck. UB is a great school.

Your chances are very good. I agree with Crazed – it should not be your only factor in making a decision. The campus is very big – a bit overwhelming, I’d say. Very laid back place. It’s not the rah rah school that Syracuse would be. Both my older siblings are up there. My brother got into the honors program at UB. He also got into U. Pittsburgh, Stonybrook, and Binghamton to name a few. He picked UB because he felt more at home up there. His numbers were not quite good as yours, but he was captain of his high school PF debate team and an Intel Science Research semifinalist. Driving up there from NYC is a seven-hour drive (at least). It’s not a day trip for your parents. Gas, tolls, hotels everytime you get dropped off or picked up. If your medical insurance in NYC doesn’t have a PCP based in Buffalo, UB will make you take their medical insurance at a cost of $1700 per school year.

A little clarification. UB, as do many - but not all - schools, requires that you have medical insurance coverage to enroll full time. The cost for that this year if you purchased coverage through UB was $1,943. You may waive this if you already have coverage that meets their requirements. See www.student-affairs.buffalo.edu/shs/student-health/insurance.php and www.healthinsurance.buffalo.edu for details.

You don’t need a Buffalo based primary care, though “emergency only” coverage won’t cut it either. They seem to accept waivers for any decent plan. Buffalo is outside our our HMO’s service area, but the plan does provide for out of area students, and the waiver was accepted.

I would suggest you really don’t want to go anywhere where you have no insurance to cover routine care (mostly handled by Student Health Services at UB) and referrals. But, this is something to be aware of when calculating costs and deciding on any school, and is often overlooked.

what do you know about the social atmosphere? i understand it is rather laid back but are there many parties and events to attend to during free time??
